I wanted a small DAC with balanced output for speakers as well as a decent headphone amp, and this delivers on both. Even though the headphone output isn't balanced/differential, it still has more than enough power for my harder to drive headphones (Sennheiser HD600/DCA Aeon Noire), as well as really low noise for some of my sensitive IEMs. My powered monitors sound absolutely incredible with them as well, I set them to 0dB gain and let the EX5 serve as the pre-amp/volume for them.
I do believe that the headphones I have are probably at the limit of this device though, so if I had something that needed more power than those, this might not be the right device for you.
My only actual gripe is that the bluetooth connection seems to always be active, even if you are back on USB input, so I've had to forget the EX5 on my phone after each time I've connected to it. It's not ultimately a big deal to me because most of the time I'm playing off my PC anyway, but I definitely avoid using the Bluetooth input now.
I put this in my 2.1 system plugged in to a WiiM Pro and it has performed well.
The included remote is continent.
I cant say much about the front headphone amp since I'm using XLR into active speakers and RCA to my Sub.
This DAC/AMP is a 50/50. While the DAC sounds really good, via the balanced out behind, but the headphone out is sadly not balanced. It sounds very sterile. Only get it for the DAC
