A great pairing for laptops and smartphones, the Topping NX4 DSD is a compact DAC/amp loaded with impressive specs. It’s equipped with the well-regarded Sabre ES9038Q2 DAC, along with an XU208 USB bridge, and it supports some of the highest-resolution audio—including 32 bit/768 kHz, DSD256 (DoP), and DSD512 (native) Read More
Using this with my Massdrop x Sennheiser 6XX, what a combo. Connected my Android phone with both the 1/8" Jack and then the USB-C, both included, and the USB connection was slightly more powerful at the same volume. The gain boost is noticeably present on these headphones and it drives them nicely without any nose or hum. I haven't tried any IEMs on the NX4, yet, but probably don't need it with these headphones. The bass boost on electronic music is decent, not overpowering, but I don't use it on most music, as this Amp/DAC is so beautifully neutral and clear. Would buy again and recommend to all, especially price per quality.
IkeAbidesDId you have to do anything special when plugging into Android device? My unit works on everything except my Android phone. When plugged in, the music comes out very low and with lots of static. Already tried a new cable, but that didnt work.
ZeedithIn fact, I plugged everything together and it worked on the first shot. The included cable I believe is a USB-B to C connector. I'm using a Google Pixel, so maybe there are other Android issues.
First and foremost, I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. I can’t distinguish between muddy bass, and high trebles or any of those things. I’m pairing this with my Sennheiser HD6XXs, and listening to About Today by The National, and it’s just a beautiful experience. This is a laymen’s endgame.
This product is well made and nicely packaged. I have used it with a variety of headphones -- primarily Denon AHD-5000, Grado SR-325, and Sennheiser 6XX and have generally been pleased with the results. I have also used with the Audeze ISine LX and KZ AS 10 IEMs. To me, the NX4 is a very neutral and uncolored product.
It works well with my Windows 10 computers, and an LG V20 smartphone. Most of my listening is with FLAC or WMA lossless, but I have used it with 24/192khz files as well.
Unfortunately, it does not function well with my Samsung S9+ phone and Galaxy S2 tablet. In order to use the NX4, I have to reboot the phone/tablet with the NX4 powered on and mounted. The connection, once established, can be randomly disrupted - by a volume change, opening another app, or a phone call.
I have already commented on this problem in the discussion section and received replies. I e-mailed Topping as well. I still have not found a workable solution - it's not the USB Audio toggle in the Developer Options menu in Settings, and the problem is not confined to Neutron. I have also tried different aftermarket cables. I believe the problem lies with Samsung and not Topping, having read a thread about compatibility issues with the phones and USB audio out in vehicles.
I wished to share this experience to prevent any potential disappointment.
Update: 10.18.18 Now using Fiio C106 cable (as recommended by another Massdrop member and connecting well to the S9+. Extra $13.99 expense.
JazzguitarfanI hadn't used the NX4 for a while so I had to break it out to answer you. I hooked it up to my Samsung S20+ and made a phone call using the Smasung supplied AKG IEMs with an inline mike. I was able to complete the call, but I suspect that the phone was using its built in mike and not the one in the IEMs.
I bought this dac/amp to use with my phone and laptop. My plan was to use it to power earbuds but it does a good job powering my recently purchased HiFiMan 4XX headphones when the power boost is engaged.I also love that it doesn't draw power from the USB connection to whatever you use as your source. The separate USB charging port can be plugged to a power source as you listen to the dac to keep it chugging along if you lose track of time and listen to it for several hours. I use a RAVpower external power source to recharge the dac when I am on the go.This gives it a very quiet power source unlike the noisy plug in to your lighter junk that most of us are forced to use while driving. Love this little dac with TIDAL.Rarely suffer through the commercial filled radio now and it will plug into your aux port on the radio while you bypass the blablabla of the radio...
This is a fantastic portable dac/amp in terms of sound. It can drive my highest impedance cans with no problem and sounds clear and open. However, I bought this primarily as a unit for my phone and have found that the micro-usb port is too loose to really keep the connection while walking (or perhaps it became loose as a result of me using it while walking, which still leaves it unsuitable for the task). All in all, it's a good product that I'm slightly struggling to find a place for.
Feels like good quality build, apart from the cables which it comes with, which I think are of very low quality. Especially the connectors on them do smell of cheap china stuff. Also the usb connections to the unit are somewhat "flimsy" and not that tight as I would have liked. Why couldnt they have had USB c ?
The volume wheel is nice, but be aware that if you pushes on it either down och up when turning it, it gets into contact with the chassis and gives a "scratchy" feeling. Maybe could have been abit better supported ?
Made my hd6xx perform out of this world compared to my old yamaha reciever which ive used before. Thou I cannot really max them out. I can get it very loud, but not to the limit of them headphones themselves. If i could have had just abit more power and some nicer cables included along with tighter usb connections, it would have got a 5
PS. Tried it together with a 990 pro and a MDR z7, they are supposed to be alot more V-shaped then my 6xx, but together with this dac/amp, my 6xx somehow outperforms them both basewise and "volumevise" for some reason. The nx4 simply made the 6xx outperform themselves on every level. I dont know how I manage to play the 6xx so loud and clean on the nx4, and I didnt get the same feeling of power and clean sound out of the other two headphones I mentioned. Its like its a damn match made in heaven. How else can I describe it when I have about infinite power, extremly good base response and super clear sound on every volume lvl, but together with other headphones I dont get the same results ?
Absolutley enough. I just want to be able to turn it up untill distortion just to know its possible. But for some reason distortion isnt present at all, regardless of volume it seems. I didnt get the same feeling trying a friends 990 pros, which got distortion alot earlier.
I've received two defective units so far. DROP was kind enough to send me a replacement, but it has the same issue as the first in which sound only comes out of the left ear cup of my headphones (NAD Viso HP50) that work perfectly fine. I would say avoid the NX4 and Topping products in general as they're incapable of delivering reliable products. Topping really lives up to its reputation as a joke of a company that specializes in making defective products that measure well.
