Okay I'll weigh in first.
This keyboard seems really,REALLY pricey. Has anyone had experience with Topre switches? How are they for quality? I know everyone's fingers are different (said the proctologist patient who shopped around), but how do these feel compared to a comparable Cherry MX switch?
You ever run a heated knife through some butter? Your fingers are the knife and Topre is the butter.
I don't really know but from what I understand , once you go Topre you can't go back.
"once you go Topre you can't go back."
^ This is not true. I went from Topre to the Royal Kludge because there are no full size 55g Realforce boards. The RK even comes silenced from the factory to boot!
There is a 104 key realforce with 55g but it's only available in Korea. It's the 104UKW. It is all white with Hangul legends.
And what kind of switches did the RK have? If they weren't cherry, what cherry switch would they be comparable to?
"I don't really know but from what I understand..."
So in other words, you've never typed on one of these before?
first off, it doesn't matter/help at all how much you read about Topre, you've to feel it and there is no Cherry switch to compare to.
My first date with Topre, a HHKB, has been like this: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/topre-realforce-87u/talk/232388
Being a lover of heavier switches i couldn't resist to try a Realforce uniform 55g, which i found pleasing regarding feel, but to loud on the upstroke. I did a silencing mod and i'm in love with a keyboard/switch never happened before. A second one is on the way, a Novatouch is sitting in front of my desk waiting to get silenced at Xmas time.
I've been using Cherry switches forever, but i can't use them anymore, no more fun, have sold or given a couple of boards away, six still stored away, maybe someday my liking does change again (not being that positive about that).
But all of this won't help you much, try to get a chance to feel one and give it some time to get used to. It might not be love on first sight/type, but after a deeper look it might become impossible to forget.
Regarding on your preference the weight of the switch might have an important influence too, which doesn't make it easier.
Thank you for that very thorough reply and the link. I agree that actually feeling it is the only way to tell; shame they don't sell these in a best buy or micro center. ;)
For the actuation force, Topre may be up my alley, as I'm tying on Cherry MX clears (though they are offset by the weight of zinc keycaps).
Maybe there's a chance to find someone/a place through geekhack living in your area to try one.
Lubed clears have been my alltime favourite cherry switch, and i'm not looking back.
55g Topre might be your style.
Can confirm. I've used 3 different Topre keyboards. Currently still own 2.
