If you go with the 45G Topre SE17T0 I think you'll be pretty close. Though if you are moving up in keyboard from a $22 KT800 membrane keyboard to a $215 Topre keyboard, I'm not sure you need a Topre. I'm typing this on the Novatouch TKL which has 45G actuation force and if I recall the 1990s when the Keytronic was the norm for x86 builds, you'd be well suited with a 45G Topre in feel comparison. I agree with your reference that a Cherry Red would be different and least like a membrane or electrocapacitive keyboard. With the Topre you get the added performance of a concical 45 or 55g spring with a dome to give you that "thonk" when you type. Hope that helps.

JediThanks Jedi! That really does help. I am thinking now that I might try the Novatouch first, but I will do some research. I am looking for something quieter than this Filco as well so not sure if NT is any louder than a RF. I had also read that 55g might be closer to my KT800, but now I will definitely try 45g out.
Thanks again.

MeldropBoth the Topre Realforce and Corsair Novatouch keyswitch is a tactile bump switch with 4mm of key travel so the switch is obtrusive to hear and will be louder than a rubber dome keyboard of any type. Your best bet to avoid noisy keys is to go for the heaviest linear (non clicky) switch though this is a compromise in choosing heavier keys to allow you to only hear the key travel and not the bottom of the key. Black keyswitches are generally the closest to a quiet keyswitch next to grey keyswitches but as a linear switch you lose the bump you are used to with a scissor or rubber dome keyswitch. Hence Topre 55G will make you "feel" the switch more. So if you like a little workout and generally have a heavy hand, go with 55G. Its all in preference and what feels right for you, not necessarily what is the best keyswitch to buy. I can tell you though that using a laptop keyboard, you would definitely feel the difference when typing 55g (hard) vs 45g (soft).

JediHmm ok. Sound is less important than feel to be honest. The closest feel overall to my KT800 is the keyboard for me. Thank you again for more information. Really is a big help.

MeldropJedi's information is a little hard to grok, so I'll try.
I only have a Novatouch, not a RF. It's noisier than a fully rubberdome keyboard, but not because of the tactile bump. The bump is created by the rubber sheet, just like in a rubber dome. The noise comes from bottoming and topping (?) out. For that reason, ANY mechanical switch is prone to noise, unless you modify it to have a soft landing (or use something like Matias quiet switches, which have cushioning built-in). I think the Novatouch is a bit quieter than my MX browns, and MUCH quieter than my MX blues.
I like my Novatouch a lot, but to me, the switch feel seems very different to Cherry switches. It initially felt much heavier than MX browns, despite having the same actuation force, though I think it's broken in a bit and is now more in line with the browns. But the feeling is still very different. MX switches are basically linear, with maybe a tactile bump in the middle of the slide. I think the Topre switches feel less linear, though my board is at work right now, so I can't check it. My guess is that Topres are going to feel more like rubberdome than Cherry switches.
As a Novatouch owner, I'm torn on this drop. I'd like to see what a Realforce is like... but I'm not sure that it'll be different enough to be worth the cost.

balefrostPeople have told me that the 45g vs. 55g switch is a very different feel. The bump is probably more pronounced on the RF as well, as some people have claimed that the Novatouch, while using Topre switches, only feels 60-70% as good as the RF's and HHKB's.
Curious, did you switch out the stock keycaps of your NT? I hear switching from ABS to PBT makes a big difference.

balefrostJust wanted to say thanks, balefrost. I went ahead and ordered a Novatouch, why not. If it doesn't work out I'll try the Realforce out before ordering it (I found somewhere that I can). So it should all work out in the end :)
