Hey all - As in the past I'm available and happy to answer any questions about the Bindle Pack or Trek Light Gear in general. One thing the description doesn't mention is that TLG is a socially conscious small business that gives back on a one-for-one basis - for every Bindle backpack we sell on Massdrop or any other channel we work with Be The Change Volunteers to donate a school supply kit to a child in need around the world. We also plant two trees for every hammock we sell and much more. If you need anything just ask!

Ok, so $23 shipping is harsh, but I figured if I buy 3 it kind of diffuses the cost. But $23 PER BAG? SERIOUSLY? No deal.

I would not use these for international travel. I got flagged for explosives at an airport and the seams of the bag tested positive for a compound that is commonly used in plastic explosives. Almost made me miss a flight, and if I wasn't a fairly harmless looking white guy, I'm sure it would have been much less fun...
To elaborate the bag was brand new, and I was using it as my "personal item" on a flight. There was nothing in it but my camera, phone, book, and a couple random snacks. They dumped the whole thing out and after swabbing all the items determined that the bag itself was what was alerting the systems, and advised me not to use it anymore.
JoeweeHi Joewee - I'm not sure what to say other than that your experience appears to be isolated. I've heard from dozens if not hundreds of customers who use their Bindle for international travel and have never had this happen. I can't even begin to take a guess as to what could have caused the test to fail (or whether it was a false positive) but I do know that there's nothing used in the construction that should cause any issues and I've flown with my bag personally many, many times. We stand behind all of our gear so if you'd like to send it in and have us send you a replacement I'd be happy to do that for you - just drop us a line at hey@treklightgear.com and we'll help you out.

What material is this made out of?
ENOTTYThe bag is made with a high-grade parachute nylon. It's the same exact material that we make our hammocks out of, which is what makes it so incredibly strong. It's extremely quick-dry, which means no rot or mildew, and of course packs down incredibly small and light.
Just catching up on these posts and it sounds like the international shipping costs were a deterrent for many of you which is unfortunate. I'm not sure how MassDrop is calculating the international costs - my guess is that it's USPS Priority Mail which is usually in the $20-$25 range for a package this size. Keep in mind, the backpack is ultralight but it needs packaging to ship which brings the total weight up to about 6-7oz.
The only method that I'm aware of that would be any cheaper is First Class International, which is still ~$10-15 depending on where it's going to. The trade-off is that First Class comes with no tracking and no estimated delivery date - I've seen it take anywhere from 2 weeks up to 8 weeks. If you're okay with that as an option let the MassDrop team know (here I'm guessing) and maybe we can get that added in as a shipping option in the future. Ultimately it's not up to us so all I can do is speculate and try to be helpful here. :)
We do offer First Class as a shipping option on our website so keep that in mind if you're still interested in the product (we occasionally have deals on our site as well so join our mailing list to get informed). Thanks to everyone who took part in the latest drop and sorry for the shipping frustrations - if you have any other questions I can help with just let me know!
