Description says flood and spotlight. Are they really different modes or just a variation in brightness of a single beam?

I love my UCO candle lanterns and mini-lanterns. But seriously, UCO: IPX4? And 1.5 hrs battery life? And no lockout to avoid accidental battery drain? Three strikes, yr out. My new Black Diamond Cosmo 225 has IPX8, lockout, dedicated mode switch, and better battery life, and weighs almost an ounce less.

Have had one of these for a couple years. Meh. Interesting attempt at semi-old school appearance and materials, but none of the design elements are really a win. Electronics are sketchy. Lens & reflector very unremarkable. Should have a dedicated on/off switch; the rotating bezel does provide convenient beam selection but it also tends to turn itself on as it gets moved around in a pack, etc. Sewn vinyl battery pack - why? Headband is comfortable but in the main this is way heavier than it needs to be. Ultimately this is an interesting design experiment but falls into the category of: "just because you can doesn't mean you should". Most would be better served by Patagonia, Mammut, Petzl, etc. offerings.

I have to comment my tremendous disappointment in UCO and their customer service and so-called warranty. I got the last uco headlamp that showed up on massdrop and i hated it for a bunch of reasons, one of which was an obvious manufacturing defect. I tried getting in touch with them periodically for a few months via their customer support email and phone number and got absolutely nothing. Then I started posting on their twitter, instagram, youtube, and facebook, and FINALLY someone got back to me claiming my emails had gotten caught in a spam filter. They didn't have an explanation for why they never returned my phone calls. The rep offered to send me a different model of headlamp (this one, the vapor, non-rechargeable). I guess that's better than nothing, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

This seems like a nice enough headlamp, my only concern is that the run time is so low. Max setting the Li will do 48min and AAA does 1.5h. For short navigation when it gets darker or doing much around campsite at night (when not around fire or other lamp) just doesn't seem like a long time.

Pryor0nFireTo be fair, anytime I'm around the campsite, I don't want max brightness, even without a campfire, for concern of ruining everyone else's dark vision. Yours is a valid concern for navigating trails. Even then, I don't think I'd be at max.

Does the rechargeable take any standard-form-factor rechargeable battery, or, is it some unfortunately proprietary design?

WRayI have a rechargeable headlamp from UCO, which I believe is the same one listed here. The case is pretty well sealed, and it's clearly not designed to get the battery out. I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but I doubt this rechargeable version would be suitable for you if you're trying to swap the battery. Also, fwiw, I've been really happy with my purchase, and I'm getting more for gifts.

Brett919It definitely gets turned on from time to time, but not as often as you might fear. Also, when it does turn on, because of the wheel design, it is always on a low function- either the red light or the lowest white which have the highest run times.
