The definition of bivy includes that it's waterproof. I nearly bought really expensive sheets. Stop this Drop or get the facts right! *Edit: deleted bad language

fmfdlrThere are bivys that are waterproof on the bottom and water resistant on top. That way condensation doesn't build in the bivy and wet you out. A small tarp or poncho is used over the top. I have used a poncho combined with a bora bivy on the whole PCT with great success in 2014. Bivys can be made out of any material so be careful making your decisions. Your foul language doesn't help and only reflects your breeding. Clean it up for this forum please. "Raggs", short for Ragetty Man

fmfdlrBivy definition A bivy, also called a bivouac sack or bivy sack, is a lightweight protection device most commonly used when camping outdoors. It should be large enough to fit over a person's sleeping bag and offer extra protection from the weather.

RaggsSorry for the language but I was about to buy something that isn't what it it seems to be. The definition of bivy according to merriam webster and wikipedia is a waterproof, lightweight shelter. Owning two (one ultralight emergency bivy and a heavy one for 2 persons) I have never heard of nor seen a bivy thats not waterproof. It should at least be part of the description if it isn't. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bivy%20bag

fmfdlrThat's for the apology on language. I get that people say things when they are angry or upset. Although non waterproof bivys are not common, Borah makes on which I have. It has bug netting and is waterproof on the bottom and sides which takes care of spray I sometimes get in a hard downpour under a poncho. The top breaths as it is only water resistant and allows condensation to escape. This kind of "bivy" allows for longer term use as you don't have to dry your sleeping bag from the condensation you get with any single wall shelter and makes it easy to escape from bugs on those nice nights. It weighs in at 6.5 ounces. I absolutely agree with you that it should be made plain that it isn't waterproof so that people aren't mislead intentionally or otherwise. "Raggs" Cool Beans fmfdlr!

RaggsPerhaps mine isn't a true bivy by most definitions but it sure looks like one. Let's call it a hybrid bivy. Maybe the definition of "bivy" has changed slightly over time. fmfdlr, your definition is the actual after I looked at several official sources like you did.

RaggsI don't mind any bag-like non-sleeping-bags being called bivy - as long as it's clear for everyone if it's waterproof. A bivy can save your life when wheater get's really bad, but this one eventually won't do the job in extreme conditions. You could say summer-bivy or something like that. I still demand this essential information in the description.
