Can these be washed with fabric softener, or is that a no - go?

JProllzTowels of any kind should NOT be washed with fabric softener -- it defeats the purpose of absorbent items.

JProllzMany fabric softeners that you put in your dryer will RUIN your dryer. Don't believe me...if you use them take your filter out and try running water through it. If the screen holds water like a bowl, that's buildup from using dryer sheets. Take a soft brush and some dish-washing detergent and clean the filter to remove the plastic like film that seals the screen shut...if you find yours does trap water, scrub the filter. Try rinsing again and it should no longer hold water. Those sheets ruin your dryer but the companies that make them don't want you to know that. An honest dryer repairman showed explained this to me years ago...when I got home and tried it, sure enough my filter held water. (IF THE FILTER HOLDS WATER, THAT MEANS IT WON'T LET AIR THROUGH AND IT OVERHEATS THE DRYER). After cleaning with an old toothbrush and detergent the filter should act like a screen again, and will not hold water. Don't believe me...read this link: https://www.truthorfiction.com/dryer-sheets/
