HerpadonD=Die. #= number of sides. With polyhedral (Complex geometric shapes) dice being used more and more over the last 30+ years it's become easier usage to call a die, or pair of dice, by the number of sides rather then it's shape. Shapes such as Pyramid (d4), Cube (classic board gamed d6), Octahedron (two pyramids connected by the bases, d8) all the way up to the Icosahedron (d20 used in games such as D&D) would make a game confusing very fast. Not counting the dice that are used exclusivly by a game, and tend to just be named after the game such as Fudge/Fate which uses 6 sided dies with + and - , no numbers.
