Offering a Model M feel, the Unicomp Ultra Classic Black is the first buckling-spring keyboard available through Massdrop. Manufactured by hand in Lexington, Kentucky, it’s a heavy, audible keyboard with a gorgeous finish reminiscent of the classic mechanical Model M from IBM. The keyboard itself is remarkably heavy, weighing around 4 pounds, and features a slightly slimmer profile with 103 keys.
Note: This drop is for the New Classic 103 only. Limited quantities are available, orders are fulfilled on a first come basis and drop will close when units sell out.
As a fundamentally different kind of switches, buckling springs originated in IBM's mechanical keyboard. They deliver a satisfying clacky feel with auditory feedback. Featuring a coil spring that sits between the keycap and a pivoting hammer that collapses when clicked, it provides a loud, tactile feedback. Ultimately, the sound feels heavier and louder than the original Model M.
The buckling-spring keycaps are monumentally clackier than most Cherry MX switches. Made of PBT, they are specially designed for this drop to look like the IBM Model M. The dye-sublimated legends feature a two-tone gray-and-white colorization, lending to the authentic feel and classic design.
