I think the 45mm size is a compromise--it is big on the wrist, but without the extra diameter, the numbers: 8, 9, 10 and 6 will be cut off by a smaller case given the same location of the chronograph and alarm subdials. I had the alpnach chrono which is 42mm and suffered from this issue. there just is not enough room to put the numbers on and have them visable with the subdials located where they are.
