Will this power the 800S nicely? Currently rocking LCD-X with ADI-2 DAC but will only get this if I’m futureproofed for my next headphone purchases.

gibgunIf you're serious... Yes it will power probably any headphone in the universe.

Starfall119i saw some discussion about the 550 focussing more on lower ohm cans compared to the 280 so just looking for some clarification if that’s BS or would make an audible difference

gibgunThe raw power would overcome any damping factor set by headphones, would probably drive speakers, it's an unnecessary amount of power for a generational leap in driver technology with their efficiencies. I'm sure the output impedance switches add something to certain headphones though.

gibgun800s yes. Something like the Susvara or 1266 no.

HighlanderHarpmanBased on what? This amp will easily power the Susvara, 1266, HE-6... anything...

monkey4054Based on experience. 7 watts at 50 ohms can't fully power the 81-83 SPL Susvara. Because 7 watts can't fully power my T20 RP MK 2. They will get loud enough guaranteed. But the dynamics, staging and imaging capabilities will pale in comparison to a better matched or more powerful system. Speaker amps are traditionally used for summit fi planars like the Susvara, 1266 TC, and LCD4 for exactly that reason. I had to balance my T20s for use with my Singxer amp because the 3ish watts single ended just wasn't enough.

HighlanderHarpmanI understand your point, however, I think 7W with sufficient current should be enough to drive those headphones well, maybe not perfectly, but it's not a straight-up 'no'. Have you tried this amp before with any of those headphones? Is there a headphone amp on the market that is powerful enough? Not everyone wants to use a speaker amp just to drive one or two inefficient headphones.

monkey4054There are some amps that seemingly do a better job even with comperable or less power. For example the A90 I have heard does quite well with Susvara. My THX monoprice powers my T20s better than my Singxer. So I think it is more how the amp is implemented more than the raw power baring serious difference in output of course. Most of audio is about synergy. But really though who is ever gonna own a Susvara or a 1266? Not I sir not I. This amp or the A90 or the Singxer will power 99% of headphones on the market. Older orthodynamic cans like the Fostex stuff are an exception. There is always the Schiit Lyr at 9 watts per channel and the Mjolnir (discontinued) at 8 watts per channel though. I doubt those would have a problem with anything

HighlanderHarpmanInteresting. I will own the 1266 one day soon haha I already have a number of high-end headphones. I didn't really like the Susvara too much for my tastes. I demoed it on a Simaudio Moon 430HAD. I own the A90 and while it is powerful, the V550 is significantly more powerful and probably sounds better. I'm not too much of a fan of the A90, quite a boring sound really.

monkey4054A90 is 7 watts at 32 if I recall correctly and the V550 is 6.4 at 50 ohms. Not too much difference almost identical at 50 I believe.

monkey4054Correction this one is about 30% more powerful at most ohm loads than the Topping.
