My desk has a piece of glass that is held up by 4 grommets, then metal bars underneath. I am assuming it would be a horrible idea to attach this stand to the glass?

because of scratching? you could probable add a thin sheet of something, like a playing card to eliminate that... if it's because you think the glass is too fragile to hold the weight, I really doubt that unless it's exceptionally thin glass

Glass desk are using tempered glass, it's pretty strong. Just make sure you are using the C Clamp, dont try to make a hole on it! :)

for my desk i got 2 samples of cork flooring from lowes (about 2x2 each) and put them under the c clamp to disperse the weight across a larger area

I have two of these attached to my glass desktop. I believe it's between 1/4 and 3/8 inch thick glass. Just make sure you don't have any edges or points pushing into the glass. They provide some pretty good foam pads to put in the clamps.
