What's the max opening of the C-clamp? My desk is 4" thick, will this still close around it?

pwaltonAmazon shows the c-clamp as 4" and the grommet as 3". Also saw a review there that stated the 4" does not include the clamping mechanism(the circle that you screw.) Essentially ymmv.
