Swapped out the Box Whites for Hako Violets, got a cable to match the MDA Big Bang keyset I put on it and I'm thrilled with the board!

KeeblurHow would you say the Hako Violets compare to the box whites. I really like box whites, but I'm looking for some new switches. Would you recommend them?

randomlygeneratedlogin111That would be like comparing oranges to bananas; they're both great but significantly different. The box whites are a splendid clicky switch with a comfortable and noticeable tactile bump, but to me they're a bit loud. The Violets are much quieter but have a clean tactile event. They sound much like linear switches I have tried. Because of the classic sound and great feels I would highly recommend them.

Case - The anodization is done very well and there were no blemishes anywhere that would be visible under normal use. The case is very smooth to the touch and is easily the smoothest case I have tried. The hole for the connector is fitted tight for the USB-C connector with a little extra space for margin of error. Plate - Same quality anodization and finish as the plate. Should note that the pictures Massdrop provides don't properly reflect where the plate will sit. With switches clipped in, the plate will sit nearly perfectly flush with the top edges of the case, and with a very minimal gap between the plate and case. PCB - As with most hotswap PCBs the switches are north-facing which can be an issue for some users with Cherry profile keycaps. The quality of the PCB itself seems solid enough. Mine had a sticker from QC noting where one socket needed touching up, but there were several more with either a end that wasn't even soldered to the board or the entire socket wasn't flush with the board when soldered. In total I had to touch up six of the sockets, which is a bit disappointing considering how well the other components on the board were done. There were some very questionable choices made when coming up with this kit. The RGB underglow is essentially useless unless you have clear-bottom or SMD switches and a sheet to reflect the light back upward. There are only two(!) screws to secure the PCB to the case despite the PCB supporting the standard 60% stand-off positions. This lack of anchoring can lead to edge cases like the PCB tapping against the ledges in the case if you are a heavy typist, but it will also change the sound profile of typing near the middle of the board compared to a standard 60% tray mount. Care should be taken when mounting caps after screwing in the PCB since the PCB will bow in the middle when applying pressure to the upper right of the PCB. People should also be aware that the plate doesn't secure to the PCB or case as some other hotswap boards would have, meaning that care should be taken if planning on replacing all switches. Overall, this was a very solid purchase for what it offers. For me, the best part of the kit is easily the aluminum case since I absolutely love the smooth feel of the case surface. The plate was cut well with no rough edges and has cutouts to allow for switch top removal. The minor gripes over design choices can be forgiven since this keyboard hit a very strong pricepoint that most vendors wouldn't be able to approach. The QC of the PCB does have me worried for people who have yet to receive their kits. For the sake of others I do hope that my PCB was an outlier since some people won't have a soldering iron to fix what is a relatively simple problem.

This thing is a piece of crap. Flex in the upper right corner is unbearable. Keycaps are trash and the spacebar doesn't even work on this board. default keymap is inane and useless. nothing like the picture. 0/10 please save yourself the trouble and spend your hard earned cash somewhere that deserves it. If I could give it 0 starts I totally would. I call it like I see it, feel free to ask me any questions about the board. Or better yet if you want to buy this thing off me I'll give you this piece of junk, and I"ll flash it to your desired layout before I do. Save you a few hours headache if you've never flashed qmk before.

ben.parkI do have two questions -- Can you give more details about the flex of the board in the corner and what the impact of that is? -- You say that the spacebar doesn't work but this board doesn't have a spacebar? am I missing something?

ronaldscottI can confirm that there is a ton of flex in both the upper right and left corners. You push the switch down and it goes down by maybe two or more mm. and the middle see-saws up. This thing really needs a spacer or support under the corners. There seems to only be support in the middle row, so it's very unstable.

I got this keyboard because I was very interested in the layout, however I found some issues with keyboard. First, the default layout is nothing like the picture it showed, this means you have to manually flash to the layout you want by using QMK which will be somewhat difficult for first time builder. You need to open and unscrew the keyboard to flash your layout every time you want to change layout (I know you can map a reset key on the keyboard through QMK toolbox). Second, the spacebar keycaps that comes with it (I also purchased the keycap set) doesn't work on this board. I want to have 2 spacebars or 4 space special icon keycaps to indicate spaces but it only comes with 3 diamond icon keycaps, so I have to use other keycaps to be used as space keys. Third, the plate flexes easily, the right side (the right screw hole) of my plate was already bent, see my picture. I wish there is a screw hole in the middle of the case to make the plate more stable but no. I setup my layout and used the keyboard for a while and I found out it's not conformable to type on this keyboard because of the space keys, I wish I can use the 2 spacebar keycaps instead of 4 keycaps. Enough of the negative points, here are the positive points for the keyboard. The case is very nice and sturdy, I like it a lot (just wish there is a screw hole in the middle of the case). I actually like the keycaps, it may not be the top quality but it's better than most of the cheap ABS keycaps. You can't use the keycap set on a regular layout keyboard due to lack of some regular keycaps such as regular shift keycap. Finally, not a pro or con, it's personal preference, if you are into this kind of uncommon layout then you may like this keyboard, otherwise, I suggest keep using your regular layout keyboard. I tried it and this layout is not for me (at least not now), I may sell the keyboard to someone else.

Very sloppy management of this drop
  1. Why did I have to dig through the discussion section to find the name for this board IDOBO?
  2. Why this board is not flashed with the layout we see in those pictures?
  3. Why we don't have a layout in QMK repo matching these pictures?
  4. No instructions or the keymap print out, especially since it doesn't match drop pictures.
Looks and feels like a tank until you start pushing on those buttons real hard since PCB is lacking proper support, especially at the top right. Not something you'll notice typing though. The case looks flawless, I really don't care about the lack of the reset button hole since you can always have it on one of your layers. All in all I think it's worth the money. https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/idobo/keymaps/default75

The Board functions just fine, but it has a very poor design. I can foresee the mounting points becoming a problem. There's only a couple and it leads to the pcb and top plate bowing and flexing oddly.

I also understood "optional keys" to be "in addition to" rather than an "option to have". I've now realized what's interesting about the way this website works is that it neuters the review process. The orders are reviewed after everybody gets their special product and sales are over. The other thing that sucks is that the keys don't have any resistance or click at all. I chose based on the descriptions provided by the vendor. I wanted this keyboard to be plug-and-play but it's cool, I'll just put it into a yard sale in 10 years. Email me if you want mine.

A lot of potential for the price, for a niche audience
I can confirm the corner flex from the pub/plate that others are describing. I really thought I could get into an ortholinear layout, and perhaps at some point I will, but the error rate at first is so high as to be deeply frustrating without the benefit to being something like a split deck/ergo keyboard. Note to others with the board, getting those two screws in is a pain, even with a magnetic screwdriver of the right size. The best way I could find was to hang both of the screws on the PCB and then lower it in slowly, seating the screws with your screwdriver without allowing them to flip as they so desperately want to do. The real problem here is that in order to flash it, you need access to the reset switch for which there is no hole on the case... May need to correct that if I use this board as a video editing macro or other macro board at some point. Also note: the board will not power on or will not stay powered on if the PCB is not in the plate- something to do with getting the right distance for the USB C cable in at just the right distance. This compounds the issue with pushing the reset button since you have to angle up one side carefully and bend in to spot where the button is while you have your QMK toolbox open to flash it. At the end of the day, I would only recommend this board if you need a giant macro board that is not a stream deck. Maybe once I get used to it that will change. Wanted a compact board with a numpad, thought this would be half the price for same features as a vortex tab 90 or something like the nym.

I did hesitate before giving 4 stars and not 5. As other people said better than I could ever do, when you put some keycaps and try to remove them later on, the pcb and top plate are bowing and flexing oddly. Can't be 5 stars. Very close to a good keyboard but still perfectible.
