Decent for the money

As strictly a phono preamp for my main system it worked well above its price point. But as a stand alone headphone amp I am honestly not all that impressed. I currently own an older LDII++, Schitt Asgard 2, Crack w/speedball and a Woo WA2. I didn’t expect this product to compete with the Woo or the Crack, it’s not even close, but I am surprised that it falls even short of the old LDII++. It beats the Asgard, I’ve never liked that amp as it’s incredibly anemic sounding. I used it with my Senn 650’s, Beyer T1 and an old pair of Senn 598’s. The T1’s sounded best with it. It’s a good starting point for a stand alone headphone amp if you are on a tight budget but I honestly think you can do much better for not a lot more money. BUT if you are buying it strictly as a phono preamp for a full system it’s actually pretty darn good, which is why I bought it. Pleasantly surprised how well it does in that situation. Mine has one other flaw, instead of the slow start I get from all my other tube gear this one is dead silent and then all of a sudden there is a pop and the sound is there. Takes a couple minutes for it to do this so I am most likely going to send it back. I think this almost has to be not right as I would t think the designers, even at this low price point, would want that to happen.

First Tube Amp

I am using this at work as a headphone amp from laptop audio jacks an alternative to a schiit mangi 2 that I had been using for years. My unrefined ears cannot really tell if there is difference in output quality between the two but I do like that it has the ability to adjust the bass and treble levels. Overall, and definitely for the price, I am happy with it so far.

Solid phono preamp

It's true; The build quality is quite lacking in terms of both the socket and knob alignment, as well as having fairly sharp metal edges on the knobs. It's not a big deal, nothing dangerous so far as I can tell. But in terms of the chassis itself and overall quality beyond the previously mentioned inaccuracies and lack of refinement, it's not built poorly. The headphone amp is adequate but not great. It removes soundstage and the tonality becomes a bit wooden. Good for the price when you consider the other feature, the phono preamp. The phono preamp is where this thing punches above its weight. Very decent soundstage, and does a good job of preserving the existing tonality while adding some tube-ness (tube-ocity?). As it handles MC as well as MM cartridges, it's become my main phono stage, replacing a Moon 110LP v2 that perhaps just didn't have synergy with my setup, considering how well regarded the Moon is. I'll one day move past the xduoo of course but right now it's done exactly what I hoped it would. I'd recommend this for its value or as a secondary system's phono stage and head amp.

It is what it is...

To start off, I have to say I bought the MP-01 to complement my main system. My main amp, a Rega Elicit Mk5 is a great integrated amp that comes with a more than decent phono stage and a very satisfying headphone output. But since this amp runs pretty hot and I listen to a lot of my music with headphones, an phono/headphone amp is a good alternative, especially in the summer when my music room gets pretty hot. My room has no windows, no a/c and running a fan that generates noise when I listen to music is out of the question. About the MP-01 now. Straight out of the box, first thing I noticed was the Bass/Treble knobs don't align with the markers when in the center position. The bass knob is 1mm to the left and the treble knob is 1mm to the right of the marker. It's not that big of a deal for me but I thought I should mention this. The rest of the unit feels and looks solid and well made for the price. Also, it is to be noted that there is no ON/OFF indicator on the front panel, so the only way to know if the unit is powered or not is by looking at the orange glow of the tubes. A small LED indicator next to the power switch would've been a nice addition. Also, the lettering on the unit is very small and located under the switches and knobs instead of above which I find harder to see and read from above. But that's just a detail I'll have to get used to eventually. On the plus side, the phono input sounds good with a MM cartridge. I don't have a MC cartridge so I can't comment on that. One thing I can say though is that the EQ dials are a great addition when listening to those "thin" sounding 70s/80s era LPs that don't have a lot of bass or sound flat or lifeless. I tested the Line input with a Bluesound Node (version 2021) using its internal DAC and it sounded a lot better than I expected. There is a subtle tube warmth to the sound but nothing to blow you away. The music sounds is a little less "cold" (and/or sterile) than with my Drop THX AAA ONE. Even with the Node, the music has a certain warmth and sounds "more analog" or closer to a vinyl sound if I can say. But it does not sound as rich and full as the headphones output of the Rega Elicit Mk5. One more thing I like is that the 1/4 inch headphones output of the MP-01 is an upgrade from the mini-jack output on the Bluesound. For my listening, I first powered the MP-01 ON and left the tubes warm up a good 30 minutes or so. I used a Technics SL-1200mk7 turntable mounted with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML cartridge. I used my Sennheiser/Drop HD-58x, the Hifiman Ananda and the Audeze LCD-2C headphones and was most pleased with how the music sounded. There is that 3-dimensionality you would expect from tubes. The sound is very enveloping and laid-back but still has a lot of energy and liveliness, especially with the more expensive Hifimans. I found these to be a very good match with the MP-01 but the LCD-2Cs are also a lot of fun and a good match. This little MP-01 tube amp seems to be friendly to Planar headphones. Of course, there's not as much details as with my more expensive setup which is normal at this price, but I appreciate the laid-back quality this little setup gives me. When hooked to my Rega integrated, the MP-01's Line Out outputs a Line level signal which means the volume control has no effect on the output. This is something I prefer because I don't have to worry about having the volume knob set too high and risking damaging my speakers. But if you had planned on using this amp as a pre-amp to drive powered monitor, unfortunately you'll have to look elsewhere. The EQ knobs are also active through the Line Out which is for me another plus. This means depending on the LP I play I can adjust the bass or treble if I need to. Since my Rega integrated amp has no EQ, this gives me more flexibility to adjust the sound. After having played music and leaving the MP-01 powered ON for a few hours, the unit is warm but not hot to the touch. It does not warm my listening room, which is perfect for the summer season. All in all, the MP-01 is a decent headphone/phono amp for the price. Being versatile as it can be used in many different configurations, it can easily fit in any sound system.

I'm hoping to use this to listen to my record player with headphones (HD6XX, Ananda Stealth, others) but I also have a pair of inexpensive (for speakers) powered near-field bookshelf speakers. They have their own volume control etc. and RCA input so I can't think of why this *wouldn't* work fine for them but I may be overlooking something. The speakers are okay but nothing compared to my headphones so the speakers would be a secondary usage case, but I'm hoping this would work. Would be a shame to have them sitting with zero use.
