Product Description
The xDuoo TA03S Tube Headphone Amplifier is a little tube-supported powerhouse, perfect for pushing your high-end headphones to sing with warmth and detail. The XMOS U8 processor drives the unit with plenty of headroom for processing, which is good because there are two separate CS4398 DAC chips supporting up to 32-bit, 192-kilohertz decoding Read More

Is there someone who can answear what is the power supply voltage that this unit uses? Is it 115 volts ? Is it 230 volts ? Is it universal ( both 115-230 volts) ? What is it ?

In the Xduoo website for this product is written that with the different cables, witch wich the unit comes, a specific voltage is associated. US plug = 110 volts power supply unit UK Plug = 230 volts power supply unit EU plug = 230 volts power supply unit AU plug = 240 volts power supply unit In the product notes its written that the TA-03S unit will ship only with US plug. I guess that means the uniw will be equiped with 110 volts power supply
bloodpigFrom everything I've seen, the only difference is the power cord. All references I've seen talk 100v-240v, and as there are no external switches, likely autosense. YMMV, but my unit (and frankly the whole drop batch I was part of) was kitted out for 230v, but works just fine on US 115v.

Hi Guys - would this work as a good DAC for darkvoice amp?

JackDeVilleIt IS an amp that happens to have a DAC in it. It directly competes with the Darkvoice. Not sure why you would want both. If you already have the Darkvoice, get a nice DAC.

Will this be able to power a 600ohm DT880 optimally? Will it sound good?
infinityfineIt will happily drive 600Ω cans. I use mine with Beyerdynamic T1.2 on the regular with great success.

Hey everyone, I'm extremely new to audio gear in general so I have a few questions: For a beginner, would you recommend this or something like a magni/modi stack? I've seen people say that because of the high noise floor on this, you'll get audible sound just ambiently, is that true? How would this do with a pair of DT 770 80 ohms? would it be a better decision to go with the 58X Jubilee's? I'm mostly interested in this for its seemingly super low price tag with its sale price vs something like the Schiit stack also i think it looks sick lol, but anything seems like an improvement sound wise as I currently have just a pair of SHP9500 cans.
jobo1799The 58x will likely work better than the DT770 80Ω. From my experience most cans below 150Ω are not really going to perform terribly well. They'll make sound, but likely not as good as they could. As for noise, that is 100% luck of the draw with regards to the tubes it is shipped with. The only background noise mine had was vibration related, with the Chinese 6C19 tubes being a bit sensitive to the vibration sources on my desk (lots of drives, fans, and pumps). Replacing with vibration tolerant Russian 6S19P-VR (6С19П-BP) resolved that problem for me.

Any news reagarding the suply voltage ? is it 115 or 230 or both (universal) ?
ArnasZIn theory it should be universal. The 2020 drop I ordered mine from shipped with Australian 230v power cable. Swapping for a US 115v had no adverse effects. Additionally the product site for this unit doesn't list any specific voltage limitations, and only has options for different power cords.

Is an amplifier gain of 16 dB really enough gain?? Not too many reviews for this headphone amp. Seems only Zeos couldn't get his eval amp to work with higher impedance headphones. You don't normally see an audio amp rated by "gain". So, again, is 16 dB of gain really enough? Thanks for any response.

netmorinIt’s not rated by ‘gain’ that’s why…I suggest you do some reading into power output @ whatever impedance your listening device is measured before spending $1 on any amp.
netmorinThis amp has more than enough gain to drive cans with 150Ω or greater impedance without having to turn the volume knob past 50%. I use this amp with Sennheiser HD58x, HD6XX, HD8XX, HD820, Audio-Technica ATH-R70x, Fostex TR-70-250, Koss Pro/4AA, and Beyerdynamic T1.2 with great success. My sources have been Schiit Gungir Multibit, SMSL M500, Drop SDAC Balanced, Drop+Airist R-2R, Topping DX7S, XiangSheng DA-05A, TEAC UD-501, Behringer XR18, and Behringer X32. All have worked well with DAC volume at fixed max. Z either had a bad tube, bad unit, or was just being a moron.

Would this pair well with a Focal Elex?
The most important tube swap is the 12AU7, best current production replacement is JJ ECC802S (gold or not, doesn't matter). The current production Genalex, Tung-Sol, Electro-Harmonix, and Mullard 12AU7 are fine too, but I personally prefer the JJ. I buy my JJ from Eurotubes, everything else from Tube Depot. As a target of opportunity, I'd suggest replacing the stock 6C19 with Ulyanovsk 6S19P-VR (6С19П-ВР). Ulyanovsk 6S19P-V (6С19П-В) are fine too, they just won't last as long as the VR. I bought mine on eBay, but that is a very hit and miss prospect.

FayneI would agree with this as im running with the same gear and tubes. HD6XX is a great fit for this amp from my experience. It's almost addicting imo.

Have just bought a Hifiman HE560 ... they quote 42oms but are notoriously difficult to drive (many blogs and YouTube reviews also confirm this) Would this be powerful enough for the HE560's - Looking for more power than my Magni 3 has Magni 3 is OK driving HE4XX & HD6XX and both are fine with that but the (4Watt) Magni almost goes into clipping to get a higher volume on the HE560. Any help appreciated. Looks a great buy but must have the power.
bipolarmanThe planar cans won't be terribly happy with this amplifier as they generally require a lot more current than this amp can push. They'll make sound, but it'll be fairly thin, lacking impact. You'll want to stick to cans with 150Ω or greater impedance with the TA-03S (and generally most single triode output cathode follower OTL amplifiers). The HD6XX works wonderfully with this amp though.

Would this be considered an upgrade from the Schiit Hel? Debating this with the price reduction or a small stack.
(Edited)
CiscoKid78That really depends on your cans and what you consider to be an upgrade. If all you have are low Ω headphones, don't bother with this amp. It won't be pleasant. Anything with tubes is going to be less accurate than the solid state, so if you're looking for something that cleanly and accurately amplifies, the Schiit is going to be better. If you're looking for the tube sound, are o.k. with its distortion, harmonics, and coloring, and have high Ω cans (like the HD58X, HD6XX, or the DT770/DT880 250Ω), the TA-03S will likely be more musical and less fatiguing. I found the Hel to be an awesome little DAC/ADC/AMP for gaming and voice communications, but prefer the TA-03S much more for media (movies & music).

FayneThank you for the reply. I’d use this primarily for Music and Gaming… this would be driving the HD6XXs which I don’t plan on upgrading right now. I’m revamping my setup so really like the look of this DAC/AMP :).
I saw a review saying this S model is updated to be output transformer type. TA-03 was an OTL type. Unfortunately official info confirms neither. Not that it matters much but does anyone know if this is ot or otl? I plan to use this with hd600, hd660s, dt880 600 ohm and Clear MG if I can.
Divine. Going from solid state to single ended OTL tube with the R70x is fairly transformative. They're Ω right in the middle of the best power band with this amp and pick up the euphony that makes tube amps worth using. Notes of holography and all that, nice bass extension, smooth mids and treble. This is my second favorite OTL amplifier for the R70x. The list goes something like: Schiit Folkvanger > xDuoo TA-03S > Cern Tube 6S19P OTL > DarkVoice 3322 > Schiit Valhalla > xDuoo TA-26 > Darkvoice 336SE Tube rolling recommendations for this are to get a JJ ECC802S to replace the 12au7, and a pair of Ulyanovsk 6S19P-VR (6С19П-ВР) to replace the 6C19, but the stock loadout is pretty ok.
FayneThanks a lot!
