I have this specific model. had a pioneer sc1222k as well as an entry level onkyo and denon. since upgrading the tv, I decided to try it due to 4k and atmos features and dolby neural x. I paid a bit over 100$ more than this drops price, but am super happy with it. I also tried the pioneer lx-501 bought from online, as the only thing that I was not satisfied with was Pure Direct amplification to the main speakers (KEF LS50) through the TSR-7810. the pioneer before that did a great job, as these speakers go down as low as 3.2 ohm. The yamaha sounds good still but just did not have enough power to drive the Kefs in pure direct. however dolby neural x sounds incredible even with music, as well as movies. the pioneer LX501 sounded like a good competitor as it was under 500$, but MCACC was terrible on the 501, completely unlike the old SC-1222K. I could not tune the bass correctly no matter what I tried with the LX501 (mains set to small, or large, and bass extention turned on or off). on the other hand this yamaha is incredible in its ease of use and room correction/calibration YPAO. I ended up getting an external amp for the KEFs which sounds even better than the old SC1222K. to top it off, I really like that the yamaha is not as tall as the pioneers, if space is an issue in your entertainment cabinet. so with a subwoofer, for movies this receiver is superb, it compares in specs to the Yamaha RX-A870, and will probably do very well with efficient 8 ohm speakers. highly recommend!
