While split keyboards may seem odd at first, they can make a world of difference for your fingers and wrists. From YMDK, this 64-key mechanical keyboard is split in half to promote a more comfortable position with both hands Read More
I remember when I first started getting into custom keyboards. I took reviews as gospel and took the building for granted. Why would you expect any problems or drawbacks with tons of happy builders writing positive reviews?
Well this particular kit comes with a lot of lessons learned. On the one hand, standards were just lower 3 + years ago. On the other hand, I think there are definitely quality control issues that is going to result in varied experiences. Don't get me wrong, you can make a nice keyboard out of this kit. But doing so requires a lot more work than alternatives and in my opinion, there are just too many better options when it comes to building a split keyboard.
PROS:
++ Aluminum body feels solid and has a nice heft that anchors well on your desk
++ Split design and RGB diffuser are functional and attractive
++ Finish on the surface looks OK, is pretty blemish free
CONS:
-- Price / Value are just not great for a kit with this many compromises IMHO
-- Very limited coverage for a kit so don't let it sit on the shelf, you must build it immediately in case you find any problems and need return / replacement
-- PCB is really limited compared to even budge boards today, and can ONLY be screwed into the case
---- no gasket options
---- almost no room for dampening
---- no daughter board
---- legacy USB B connections
-- Stabilizers are SO DIFFICULT to tune for this plate mounted design and make it A LOT of work to get a good typing experience
-- RGB lighting is not strong enough for shine through keycaps
-- Indicator lights in top left corner never worked for me (maybe this is a series / firmware issue)
-- WEIRD key layout required me to combine a base kit, an ortho kit and a modifier novelty kit to use premium keycaps
-- The keycap set that they sell with this is too budget for a kit like this
---- Kit keycaps sometimes sit loose in the stabs, resulting in keys that come out too easily
CONCLUSION:
So am I the unluckiest person to buy this kit, or am I just the most annoyingly detail oriented? I don't know. All I can tell you is that I regret not sorting this kit out the day I received it. Instead I have invested a ton of time getting this board into a usable state. And I have a set of keycaps I will never want to use on any other board, and a board I will probably never want to sell despite the problems. I am not big on passing on my disappointments to others.
There are some super cool things you can do with this. I have seen some people add on RGB LEDs to the PCB. But I think it's not for me. A lot of people seemed to love this kit. I just wasn't one of them.
I used a Mistel Barocco for a while because I wanted a split that wasn't ridiculously ugly in the name of ergonomics. This was the first attractive metal keyboard I could find outside of Taobao and I've been very impressed. Sound dampening is already great and having equipped it with Gateron yellows I really like the feel and sound. It could do with better keymapping tools and USB C input, but for the price I'm exceptionally happy and I'd recommend it in a heart beat.
90% well built and designed. once its together I'm happy
This kit seems very sturdy and reliable, but the only issue I encountered was having difficulty removing a switch once it was snapped into the pcb/plate. That's the only reason I'm leaving this at 4 stars, but other than that, any issue seems to be of my own accord, so I cant complain. I bought this with the GMK laser set and some Everglide Sakura pink switches.
I love the design of the keyboard and the layout choice but for $180 I do not think this keyboard is worth it. I say this because it uses mini USB instead of type c and I wish there was a option to switch out ports but other than that I love the keyboard!
Threw some lubed Torquise Telio switches in, and some Drop MT3 Black-on-white keycaps, and it is simply amazing. Can't tell you how the default stabilizers are because they were immediately replaced with screw-ins. I can highly recommend this combo.
I love the form of the keyboard. It's my first split/ergo keyboard but I used it for work the day after I built it and have never looked back. Very comfortable and I like the style of the light.
I wish it had USB type-C cables that are curled and white. But that is my only gripe.
Purchased this board for $180, assuming it will come with keycaps and switches. It didn't.
It is $130-140 on other websites bare-bones and $155 with switches.
If you think Drop is giving you any kind of a value, they are not. They are stealing your money. Save yourself headache and purchase it elsewhere for $50 less.
I waited forever to get this and when it finally arrived, only part of it worked. It had so many issues. I ended up returning it. Also it felt a lot cheaper than I expected. Definitely not worth the price even if it works properly.
I purchased this keyboard with the included PBT keycaps and Cherry Mx Brown Switches. The keyboard is incredibly comfortable and ergonomic and has a nicely weighted metal base. The product came fully assembled and the included cables and keycaps are extremely high quality.
Sent me broken key caps, worst then Steph curry throwing a 3-1 lead. They can’t even send me 3 key caps to replace the broken one, Fersure never buying from drop again
I opted for the Kailh Box White switches, recommended "animal-themed keycap set" as well as a custom keycap, "ZOMO Aluminum & Silicone Kitty Paw Artisan Keycap."
I also ordered custom cables through /r/mechmarket user nairad15. The cables were made by https://www.cablecraze.net/ to my specifications and they are perfect.
What I love:
The clickiness is so satisfying in sound and feel.
The ergonomics, obviously!
The RGB looks pretty cool.
I received my order over a month and a half earlier than expected.
Easy to put together.
Feels heavy and well-built.
Not so great:
I was only sent the EXACT number of switches for the board. It's really easy to bend a pin when installing them. I ended up bending 4 of them in the process but was able to bend them back so every key works now. I thought it was a typical courtesy to include a few extra.
Mini-USB connections. MINI, not MICRO. I wasn't a fan of the cables it came with so I had to order custom ones. Mini-USB to Mini-USB is not common so there aren't a lot of options readily available. I highly recommend CableCraze.net as he was able to take on this project despite never having made this type of cable before. He absolutely nailed it and it took less than 2 weeks for me to receive them.
The Bootmapper software is a bit confusing for someone that hasn't used such software before. It's not entirely user-friendly but I was able to find the RGB settings.
I really wish the actual keys were backlit. It's possible to achieve but you'd lose hot-swappability and need to solder all the LEDs yourself.
I really wish the 3 indicator lights came either pre-soldered or as an add-on item.
The keyboard lays absolutely flat. I bought some stands on Amazon to angle it.
Overall I really love it.
teaeggAwwww! Thank you! I really appreciate it! I always wish others would leave reviews on things I’m interested in so I’m being the change I want to see I guess :)
