Can someone please educate me on this product's application?

ecinekoIt's a security key that generates 44 character length passwords. Under more specific circumstances, you can use it as oppose to an actual password by tying to to an application, say logging into your computer. In this case, the YubiKey becomes the password because every time you log in using it, the password is different and immediately thrown out after use.
I bought one, and to be fair the every day use is limited. It was more of a curiosity buy anyway.

ecinekoI would add to thebrassthief by saying it's a way to implement two-factor authentication with all you online accounts. Two factor authentication is essentially combining something you know (password) and something you have (yubikey or otherwise). Google does this by asking for your password, but also allows you to use dual factor by getting a code from your phone app or text
Combining the Yubikey and software like LastPass which supports Yubikey integration will allow this dual factor security on every online service there is, by only allowing you to access your LastPass vault if you have your YubiKey and use the one-time-password generator
Personally I use it every day, and I've assigned the second "slot" on the Yubikey to be a static password for my encryption keys. For this I've made my keys both a password that I have in my head as the beginning of the encryption key, and the last part of it is the static password on the YubiKey. Still very secure.

douchecanoeI actually tried it's integration with LastPass and it wasn't what I expected. The only thing you use it for is logging into your LastPass account itself; you don't use the YubiKey to help generate passwords. I was pretty disappointed and they weren't that specific about it before buying their premium service and finding out myself.
Though I can say I've spent $12 on worse. :P

thebrassthiefWhy have you expected yubikey to help you generate passwords?
