I'm surprised at the number of people willing to pack their bear canister upright. Seems like a nonstarter for me. It would seem to be to often too unstable on end like that. Do others have favorable experience with canisters packed vertically/on end like this pack requires?

SequoiaGhostI have packed a backpack with the bear canister both ways over the years. I find my pack sits better on my back with the canister vertical, keeping the weight closer to my center of gravity. With the canister sideways it put more weight to my sides. On a rock scramble it is harder to control like that. I guess it's a personal choice. I like to stuff my lighter stuff down the sides keeping the heavy gear in the center.
