I finally retired my 7lb, 18yr old Gregory Shasta for the Maven and have taken it out on 2 backpacking trips so far. My experience with it has overall been very good so far, with a few kinks. I had to carry a lot of water this past trip so my pack was probably around 40lbs and it felt just fine. I had to get used to the smaller hip pads compared to the Shasta but it felt like it carried the load well. I also really like the simplicity of it....

I'd like to add my $0.02 on this pack (58L [M] Lava Grey) as I purchased it from Moosejaw a couple months back and just returned from a 5 Day trip in the Sierras (Rae Lakes). Jake If at all possible rental of equipment would be advisable at first. Or, borrowing from a friend. If you have lots of money you can start out buying the lightest, best stuff out there. It will fit in the small backpack. Otherwise, you are going to get to learn a great deal as you go along. There are tons of resources on the internet. In your case you are going to start out carrying more than you need and it will weigh more than it needs...
