Massdrop x Fostex TR-X00 Ebony Headphones
1. Other than having different wood used for the cups (Ebony wood vs Purple heart wood), they also have a little bit of a different frequency response. See these measurements from Head-Fi showing all 3 TH-X00 versions: 2. The TH-X00 are totally different headphones compared to the HE4XX. The TH-X00 are closed back (mostly) and easy to drive without a headphone amp. The HE4XX are planar magnetic open back headphones that leak sound (in and...

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Headphones
These two headphones are very similar in sound except for the impedance. My LG V20 with the HD58X sounds amazing but with the 6XX not loud enough and so lacking in details, highs and bass. With my powerful Home Audiotecnica AMP that can output 30+ Watts on the headphone Jack both headphones sounds really good but definitely the 6XX needs more juice and need to turn the volume dial up to sound the same as the 58X which makes me think if you...

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones
Finally, it just arrived. Lucky me, I did not get charged by the customs. First impression, I never used open back headphone before, the sound leak is higher than what I expected. So far I like it.

Which headphones + MP3/DAC/Amp. would you buy with $500?
No problem. Open back headphones leak sound, and also let outside sound in. This makes them best for quiet environments. There's nothing wrong with using them with a portable amplifier, but most people use them exclusively at their desktop so getting a desktop amp seems like a no brainer to me. (At least in most cases, obviously there will be exceptions) Feel free to ask me more questions. I'm not a veteran audiophile by any means, but I can...

Headphone use for Music!
Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's are nice, they made me fall in love with velour(/cloth) pads. I even saw they seemed to drop the price to around $150 lately. They have some pretty nice punchy bass, but don't sound dark or overpoweringly bassy. At first I did find the treble to be rather harsh/sharp. I have the 250 ohm version purely for desktop use though. As for some of the suggestions people have given, just remember some of them are open...

Sound-cancelling headphones?
I've been watching and hoping for a while now that we can get a drop on a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones. I'd love a pair of Bose QC's but don't want to spend that much. My current Monster Inspirations leave something to be desired ...
