I say it depends? If you are used to Beyerdynamic or Audio Technica AD series, yes the top end isn’t as bright. If you listen right out of a smartphone or cheap amp (remember, this used to be a flagship $500 headphone), that will dull the transient response and punchy dynamics of this headphone. I did something similar to your 12 gauge mod to some Sony V6 headphones. I found some .375 inch round foam weather stripping at Lowe's (I think it was made to put around window air conditioners). It did not have any tape or adhesive on it so all I had to do was measure how much I needed, snip it off and stuff it under the ear pads. It worked great plus it gives some more cushion for the pads. the fiio e10k is very popular for about $75. they have a portable e17k model if you want to use it on the go for about $100. i had the e10k with fidelio x1 headphones. i couldnt notice a difference. i sold both. kind of a waste of money. that being said i thought i would give the hd6xx a shot. my m50x headphones are great, i put a mod mic on them and they are better then any gaming headset i have ever heard. i also have used sony mdrv6...

Setup- Using tidal with Sennheiser 650 cans along with Xduoo mt-604 balanced tube amp and Dacmagic Plus dac. Sound is amazing with this $169 amp. Pic 3&4- Audeze 2 open back headphones with a modified headphone stand, vinyl player is a LuguLake, and the speakers- Edifier P12 desktop dpeakers.What you don't see is I have a Moukey Phono preamp for headphones and a Hinter amp for the P12s. And hanging on the wooden desk is Hifiman he-4xx. HEADPHONES in the 1st pic from L to R are Senn. 650s, Ibasso SR2s, Audio Quest Night Hawks, and Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones. I agree, I read online that AKG K553 Pro is similar to the Audio-Technica MSR7, Sony MDR1A and the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 . The MSR7/MDR1A have a removable cable. (Both are closed ear, and isolate outside noise.) If they charged extra for a removable cable jack, I'd gladly pay for that feature. Heck, I'd be happy buying my own cable if it just added a port on this thing. Ironically, while I can easily mod a headphone, I'm hesitant to do so...

Your not making sense. Of course it is by design that they leak sound in and out, hence the long vent they were designed with, which leaks a lot of sound, by design, get it?? The vent is to lower the bass level (BY LEAKING IT) and increase sound stage size. A fully closed Fostex with no vent would be unbearably bassy and all the spacious sound stage that people rave about would be gone. They are not quite semi-open, but they leak enough sound...
