There Are Pandas, and Then There Are Pandas.
And this isn't either of them! The Pandas we're talking about here, are watches, not bears. And what got me thinking about them (again) was a link posted this morning by @cm.rook who pointed a few of us to the very attractive (and not terribly priced) Yema "Rallygraph" Panda which, in it's most traditional arrangement, looks like the one on the left, but can also be had in the version on the right: The model on the left is a true Panda, while the model on the right is called a reverse Panda. The reason for that distinction is clear--Panda bears, only come in the first arrangement. If you are willing to stretch the budget a bit, you can get yourself a Sinn 556 which I have found to be a watch great for any occasion. You don't have the functionality of the bezel that you get with a diver, but you get one versatile watch (which sounds like what your primary goal is).
Comes in at 38.5mm across, only 11mm thick. It still gives off a tool watch vibe but is a little more "formal."
556i
There are a lot of video and written reviews out there. The one drawback is they are only available online in the US, so you won't have a chance to see them in person unless you know someone who owns one. I will say it has quickly become my most worn watch in the past 6 months because of the versatility (I have a 556i on bracelet).
