Sorry I'm new to all this but can someone explain the difference between cherry mx red and brown. I am trying to get the least clicky switches. Like I've seen videos of people typing on these keycapps that are so smooth and barely make any noise. How the hell do they do that? Thx - keycap noob

As erickong mentioned, reds are linear (smooth force down) while browns have a light tactile bump (uneven movement profile as force is applied to the switch). Browns are light tactile, others have a more pronounced bump. In general, linears are quieter than tactile, but both can be very quiet and in fact several of them have "silent" variants that are quiet. I personally have some Cherry Silent Reds (linears) and some Zeal Aqua Zilents (tactiles). The Silent Reds a little quieter, but the I prefer the feel of the Zeal. Several things can be done to diminish the noise of a press. The easiest two are to lube the switches and to put on O-rings. I'm personally a big fan of lubed switches (much smoother feel), but not a fan of O-rings. O-rings make the press feel smushy in a way I don't like. *IF* you are serious about quiet you can do some googling to find other alternatives (e.g. modding they keyboard itself). My personal experience is that modding the stabilizers and lubing the switches is 95% of the solution and you can just do that and be happy. Do more than that if the modding is fun for you.

IzkielThank you for your detailed response. Ive come to find that I like linear quiet switches but now there is this Holy Panda craze and I hear about all these gateron switches. It seems like a new switch comes out a day!

broadbrah92You are not kidding! This has become a hobby for me so I've acquired about 20 sets of switches, a mix of clicky, tactile and linear. My preference is that order, but the reality is that I enjoy having multiple to try and swapping around. In some ways my favorite is whatever I'm using right now. As long as it is fun you are doing it right.
Red in linear. Brown is light tactile.
