Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. When? Saturday, June 4th from 1-4pm.
Location & Directions
Base Camp AVL's big room. 133 Church st, Asheville, NC, 28801
Parking & Contact Info There is some parking at the event space. There are also quite a few nearby parking decks and street parking. I've never had an issue parking in downtown Asheville before. I will probably bring cones or something to put in spots that people can use to unload stuff before parking if the location lot gets full.
Cost & Misc.
The event is totally free! If you feel inclined or are capable of any size donation to help cover the cost please PM me. I paid the $300 room rental out of pocket, $10-$15 a person, for those than can afford it, should help cover the cost easily. If you'd like to donate you can PM me for my PP info, or just let me know at the event.
There will be an exclusive NC Meetup color Frankenfurt (KK+Retro Collab cap) for sale for $40 at the actual event. There are 10 total. Thanks to Kudos and Koala for helping support the event costs like this!
There will also be quite a few items that are being given out. Myself and quite a few others all are going to bring items to raffle off in some form or fashion!
Lodging
There are many hotels and airbnb places in Asheville, but also surrounding areas. Black Mountain is ~20 mins away and has some cheap places to stay as well. If you want to split the costs with someone, just post in the thread that you are looking for places/roomies for the weekend.
Other Weekend Activities I know many people are coming for the weekend, not just the meetup itself. I'm sure there will be plenty to do on Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday.
Breweries are a top attraction around Asheville as well. If you are a drinker, there are many fantastic breweries and local beers worth checking out.
The meetup is right downtown, so there will be plenty to walk and do after the meetup itself is over. Record stores, coffee houses, beer, local art stores.
