Quick question regarding your Spyderco Calypso Jr. Sprint run with super blue steel. Is the blade off center and does the lockbar sit flush with the blade when open? I recently got one and have both of those issues with mine.

Gunnersmate2To the left of the Calypso jr there are several Spyderco’s with the rivet pivots and rivets holding the handles together. It really pisses me off that Spyderco did that! An owner can’t do a thing with it!

DougFLA123My thoughts exactly. It would cost an extra 42 cents for a screw instead of a rivet. 🤯

Gunnersmate2I watched a review of the Spyderco Manix 2 by Nick Shabazz. The Manix 2 has torx screws but in order for him to remove them he had to heat the screws up with a soldering iron for 15 to 20 seconds, because the screws were covered in red loctite. So Spyderco apparently uses red loctite and rivets so you can not take their knives apart. I’ve used blue loctite on knife pivots to keep them from loosening up after continued opening and closing, but I would never use red loctite! Crazy!

DougFLA123That Manix was the first Spyderco I bought, and only the second knife I'd attempted to entirely disassemble, because I needed the blade out to force the patina on it. To make a long, physically painful, and infuriating story short: I FINALLY consulted the Internet and learned of the red loctite on the pivot, after I had everything else apart. To this day, I've never gotten the pivot loose (though I havent really tried since then). I just monitored my patina-creating vinegar levels carefully, so as to keep it out of the pivot, or anywhere else I couldnt get my little green Japanese rust eraser (the name escapes me). What a bitch. I'd love to swap out at least the scales on the Manix, and maybe more, but it's not worth the trouble, esp since you cant just order up replacement hardware if you strip the screws, like, say, you can with ZT (or a new pocket clip, all free; new blade costs $30). I resent knife companies that wont let me work on my own damn knife. Except Microtech. That prohibition is...pretty sensible.

Gunnersmate2Just double-checked to be sure. To borrow a PVK Vegas expression: blade is dead nuts centered, opened and closed. I didn't quite know what you meant with the lock until Iooked closely, and compared it to my Chaparral, the only other back lock I have. My Caly Jr. has the smallest of mismatching between the lock-bar and tang. When the blade is deployed and locked up, the blade sits ever so slightly lower than the lock. And I mean the difference is VERY small, maybe half or a quarter millimeter. It can just barely be felt and seen; wouldn't have noticed w/o looking for it. I've never really used one of their FRN/back locks knifes. Feels a little sloppy overall. But nothing like yours, it sounds like. I believe it's time for you to declare shenanigans, and put the Spyderco warranty to the test. Yeah, it's a what...$75-$80 retail knife, but it has much more potential value; or you plan to use it, in which case you cant have any funny stuff going down with the lock up. That's a major issue, and Spdyerco claims they'll fix it for you. Keep us posted on how it goes, if you do send it in. And seriously, please send it in. I know it's a pain but I think Spyderco skates by on reputation too much.

HatuletohThanks for checking your spyderco for me. I have contacted spyderco's warranty/repair and will be sending it to them next week. I will definitely keep everyone informed on the outcome. I was extremely disappointed with this knife at first but now that I've thought about it is like you said , a chance to check spyderco's warranty department. Thanks for helping me see the opportunity in this otherwise disappointing situation.

HatuletohCrkt also has an outstanding warranty department. Free repair parts no questions asked. They didn't have a pocket clip available to replace my bent one so they replaced my knife. I appreciate companies that stand behind their products and customers

Gunnersmate2Even though it’s been a little bit of a disappointing knife for you, it’s still a pretty unique knife. There are not many “regular” folding knives that have a blue steel blade. I think the only other knives I’ve seen that have a blue steel blade are the Japanese friction folders, so the Calypso Jr is unique and pretty cool in that sense. Hopefully Spyderco is able to do some good work on it for you and take care of it’s problems.
