Got a Schiit Stack, which I know is entry level, but I'm not ready to drop $3,000+ on a amp/dac combo yet, and a pair of Hifiman HE-560's. I've done critical listening to various genres, and I'm still not hearing the difference between flac and 320 mp3's. I'm really trying too. There might be a slight improvements in classical, but unless I drop the mp3's to 96, the wide open soundstage, the depth, etc, just isn't there, regardless of burn in. Don't get me wrong, everything sounds better on my setup versus straight plugging into a 1/8 jack on my pc or phone, but considering people stating you need to spend big to reap that extra 2%, I can't justify it.
The differences at this high end are extremely diminishing. Remember when HD tvs came about, the difference from analogue to HD was massive, but the difference from 1080p to 4K was not as impressive, unless you get right up on the screen, and no one watches tv like that. Sound is worse, AM to FM was huge, FM to CD was big. CD to HD tracks, starting to lose the jump. I can make out slight variations, but at that point, I'm not listening to music and instead listening for errors, and didn't get into higher end gear to become a tester, I just wanted to enjoy my media more.
