Hi. I'm a beginner on hi-fi stuff but have experience of music production (have used ATH-M50x for years) meaning I'm used to flat sound but, I'm looking for a more colored sound for fun DIGITAL SOURCE activities like movies and video games, FLAC music playback. Would you go with HIFIMAN HE5XX Planar Magnetic Headphones or something else like beyerdynamic DT 990 (often touted as the fun version of the DT line)?

Only you can know what sounds fun for you. I own the HE400 and the Grado SR325e, and find them both fun, but for different reasons. I actually like them almost as much or more than some much more expensive headphones I’ve heard (Hifiman HE1000V2 and ZMG Verite open). My suggestion is to purchase them from retailers who give you the longest audition (i.e. return) period, so you can try them out for yourself.
