I now have a Denafrips Ares R-2R DAC. I do know that I have never heard anything as alive, as what this DAC helps produce, @<$1K, new off the bay @ $700 shipped. I did a crap load of reading, everything,,, too much;) Native DSD capability was a must for me; why it’s not an MD/Arist or Soekris etc. If I had more coin to blow, I would get the next up in the line, or totaldac, now that I have tasted R-2R... F'n rabbit hole... rastusFunny, I had the Denafrips Venus but it was just way too laid back and soft/blurred for me, so laid back that it cut off like 2 KHz of treble extension and significantly reduced transparency. The Holo Audio Spring DAC level 3 was also too laid back for me. I may never return to R2R... but then again some of the best systems I have ever heard used really high end ones, e.g. an all Audio Note system using their DAC 5 Signature.

RhamnetinYou went to Venus and returned to Planet Delta Sigma? I am hearing a life in some recordings, an ethereal realness, almost spooky. A recent experiment with a studio recording done in DSD exemplified this; it was as though I were an avatar through the Elex’s and w/speakers only the Princess Leia pop-up hologram was not working. https://bluecoastmusic.com/Meghan-andrews/fire-single#.W-kInaROnYW Not that it was too smooth, velvety or laid back, but a normalcy, yes oorrganic even, digital pesticide free... Reminds me of going out to get a part for my son’s bike in ‘97’ and coming back with a chain, along with,, the new audio store’s, just across the street, demo Rega Planet $700 CD player... the sound compelled me... ask my wife about it... Now that you made me read a review about the Audio Note DAC 5 Signature;) I need some new friends,, like with a Totaldac... The sampling search in the flowing audio media river continues,, for more recordings with the spark of life left in them. Interesting that the Audio Note reviewer goes into this a bit, he would like a studio DSD recording methinks: “My view is that digital cannot resemble the original because of the inaccuracies introduced at the point of entry in the digital domain. The errors and omissions introduced by all current and past methods of conversion are so great that, at best, all we get is a card board copy of the original” https://www.dagogo.com/audio-note-dac-5-special-review/

rastusI think dagogo is in Audio Note's pocket to be honest. I returned not to Delta Sigma but to Chord Electronics where I will likely remain.

rastusWhoever wrote that quote at the end has, at best, a severely lacking understanding of how digital audio works. It has been possible to digitize an analogue signal to a level of accuracy far beyond what human ears can detect since the 80s. Read this article from Xiph, the organization behind FLAC and several other formats, then this and this from the Audio Engineering Society, and, optionally, this article from NwAVGuy that, while not as neutral or scientific in tone, contains plenty of actual science and facts. The first one is particularly relevant since it demonstrated both that high resolution audio offers nothing of benefit and that going from digital to analogue was audibly indistinguishable to a large sample of practised listeners to going from digital, to analogue, back to digital, and then back to analogue, demonstrating that digitization does not degrade the signal to any perceivable degree.

rastusWelcome to the reality of human perception, where what is right in front of one's face can be missed, and what does not exist can be perceived anyway. It turns out that the brain being able to send signals back to sensory inputs and alter their activity can produce some interesting results. I did not say recording; I said digitization. Modern tech brings lots of cool stuff to recording, like convolution, but that will not matter to anyone besides fringe nutters like us until producers stop using a steam rollers as mastering engineers.

The_JniacHave you listened to recordings, first recorded in DSD, not up-sampled? I only have one: https://bluecoastmusic.com/meghan-andrews/fire-single#.XH84yaROklQ

rastusI have several albums from Yarlung. Neither I nor a couple of guys from the music production program at my school could pass an ABX test comparing the original Direct to DSD recordings to the redbook downsample.
