Best ultralight backpacking poop trowel

more_vert
I bought one of these for my kid (who is 24 years old) and when it came in the mail, I couldn't believe how light (15 grams) and sturdy it was. I recall the trowels I used to use as a boy scout in the 70's and this one is 100X superior. I love the hand-made craftsmanship and great personalized service/communication from the owner of the company. http://www.qiwiz.net/trowels.html

I’ve used QWiz’s small ti trowel on five long AT sections and a week on the NCT. I find it to be nearly perfect. The thin titanium used to fabricate them slices right thru thin roots. The curve has prevented any buckling. At 11g, it’s weight is like that of a feather! Over 6 years, I have worn out the dip on the handle, but that stuff is available at any big-box hardware store. If I ever damaged mine, I’d buy another.

A stick, rock, ice axe, heel of your shoe, or whatever else you have on hand. Just takes the effort to make the hole deep enough.

They look great, the price tag is just unrealistic for me. I just got a deuce of spades after playing around with trekking poles, a snow tent stake, etc. The absolute best tool for digging a hole is your ice axe, never have used it for it's intended purpose (thank God), but it is a little heavy for a trowel. The Deuce of Spades is aluminum, so it does flex, but at $15 it is what it is.
