Upgrading HD6XX. What's next?

more_vert
Hello all! Pretty novice listener out there. I have just a basic set up with the HD6xx headphones and Cambridge Audio Alva Duo/Schiit Magni 3 headphone amp. I am looking to upgrade headphones to something a little more exciting in the near future and want to know what you all might think are the best recommendations. I have so far looked at: Senneheiser HD8XX Focal Celestee Focal Clear Focal Elex I don't know exactly what would be the next logical step in my headphone progression. I've listened to the Celestee and really like those but wonder if any other headphones listed might have something more worth while in terms of quality and clarity of music. Let me know if you guys have any insights. Thanks in advance for any of those who give their two cents.

Elex, 8XX, Aeon, or Ethers are all good choices. IMHO, if your source is PC based, get the SoundID EQ; all those headphones benefit from their profiling and (hopefully) your thoughtful tweaking. The most comfortable of the four, for me, are the Aeons, and they sound pretty good. The 8XX and Ethers are the biggest jump to my ears. I probably listen to the 8XX set the most.

TzamazThanks for the input man. I listen to records with my headphones so unfortunately can't use the EQ. What did you like most about the 8xx and the Ethers that was the biggest jump to your ears?

wcbrown1996The 8XX, when compared to my 650s, are cleaner across the entire spectrum. The 650s have a wonderful midrange that the 8XXs expose as out of balance with the rest of the spectrum. Metheny’s group is an amazingly talented group of musicians and the 8XX expose the wonderful sound they produce in concert really comes through when you listen with the 8XX. The Ethers bring a level of accuracy and definition to string quartets and the Tallis Scholars singing Allegri Miserere that I hadn’t heard before. Both make me want to spend $4K on a pair of headphones and another $7K on a DAC and Amp. Thank goodness sense prevails.
