Do I need just an amp?

more_vert
I'm brand new to all of this audiophile stuff and I'm thinking of getting some Sennheiser 6XX headphones. However the impedance is 300 ohm, so I highly doubt that I can reach the desired volume with just my motherboard amp. I want to know if I get a separate amp will I need a separate dac as well or will the motherboard dac still work with an external amp? Also if I need an amp or a dac/amp combo I would like some recommendations under the $100 price point if they have any, something to just get started without spending too much. Edit: Heard some really good things about the HD 560S and saw it was a bit cheaper than the 6XX and was wondering if those would be a better pair to start with, if so what amps pair well with 560S?

You should also look for an external DAC- A digital to analog converter. Luckily, there are really good products with both a dac and an amp. I am using the ifi zen air dac (100$), and I use the he400se (100$), and to me they sound really good. Yes, you could probably get away with using onboard audio, but it wont sound as good rather than using an external dac-amp combo. Also, I have heard people say the k5Pro is pretty good, though I have never heard it myself. (edit- Fixed spelling errors)

I use the 250ohm DT880 all the time and they work fine with everything. I use a sony phone and the onboard audio is more than enough. Front panel audio on my pc is fine as well.
