Is there a way to programmatically change the keyboard’s layer.

more_vert
I like the idea of having different layers for my keyboard—but I’d like them to work in pair with software. For example, if I’m using Vim, I’d love to have it automatically change the keyboard layer when I switch from normal mode to insert mode. Is there any way for an application to change the keyboard’s layer?

There isn't a way with QMK or similar firmware to have it know what application you are using automatically, but you can use sitcky layers to switch modes on your keyboard and make a key on the keyboard do that. For example layer 0 uses right alt to switch from game mode to vi mode which is layer 1, and in layer 1, right alt if you hit it again goes back to game mode. There are 16 layers available so that should be plenty for most people. You could even have a rotation knob choose the mode if you have one. To get keys that light up you need double shot keys that are designed for that purpose. Until then it is better to have a light pointed down at your keyboard.

Hello I got the drop ctrl keyboard as a gift and I tried to get the letters on the keys to light up but I had no luck with this. I need to see my keys in low light but that is impossible with just backlighting. Could somebody, please help me? I have a gaming keyboard for my 2nd PC and the keys light up fine I do not understand why it is so hard to get the keys to light up on the drop ctrl... and if they are not supposed to light up that's stupid cause you can't see the letters in low light duh..... HELP PLEASE!

chrisjamesGet shine-through keycaps. The backlight will shine through the key legends, so you can read them.
