Long Ago… I was working as a thin film process applications engineer and asked to check out some problems with the new Philips-Balzers Collaboration CD production systems, that had just arrived in the US. It was a sharp learning curve for the record houses going from pressing hot vinyl, to thin film production…. Thought I’d share my personal perspective on an old and yet still loved form of media. These SEM micrographs are archival here now, don’t worry things got a lot better;) None of us working on the stuff, owned or heard a CD player at the time the production equipment was first coming online here in the US. We heard the “Oh Wow!,, you wait”… from overseas…:( We finally had the first demo, it was on the production floor, a booth getting ready for a trade show, with great Revox hardware etc., it was beyond entrancing. Keeping all my discs and Rega Planet player (R-2R?), I just don’t buy any new media.
