Picked up some el cheapo Creative speakers back when I was in college. Nowhere near mid-fi, but they're fun enough to get you dancing. Might have been these: http://us.creative.com/p/speakers/inspire-t12
Micca Bookshelves or Pioneer SP-BS22-LR... the latter is currently 89.99 if you have prime and is about the best you are going to get sub $100/pair. Ignore a certain poster who feels everything sub $XXXX.XX dollar value "isn't worth your time." He's just grumpy he's been banned from major audio forums across the web so he spews his bile here.

I don't think there is such a thing as "good speakers" for less than $1500. If you are are willing to go with "okay" speakers, there's some cheaper options like Chane, Elac, etc.

True, but it'll make me feel better. And in the end, isn't that what really matters?

Normally wouldn't condone violence, but something about how this gent (and I use that term VERY loosely in this context) ragging on something merely because of its price doesn't sit very well with me.

Check out Bic America bookshelf DV62si. You can pick them up much less than MSRP and they sound great for the price. I set up a 7.1 surround for a friend on a tight budget using two sets of those with three centers across the front and was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of sound for the price.

At that money you cannot buy anything better than an Edifier R1280T if you like balanced sound.
