Are the tubes actually used by the amp? or are they just for show? The description doesn't mention them as a feature, only that they enhance the 'styling and warmth'.

"Warmth" in this usage should mean sonic warmth, aka euphonic 3rd order low-level harmonics, a characteristic of vacuum tube amplifiers, as is soft peak-clipping. Although preamps exhibit this to a degree, the real impact is heard in instrument ampliers with tube Power Amplifier stages. If the output stage is a well-designed class D amplifier, I can say I've not heard Douk's implemenation, but others that are impressive. I'd like to hear what others think of the sound on this one.

From what I can gather and my limited knowledge, the tubes are used by the amp in a later stage. The heavy lifting is handled by solid state electronics within the AMP, then the tubes "tweak" the sound, as they have a warmer touch when compared to the very simple and flat sound of solid state components. SO it's 50/50, they look cool and they change the sound a bit. They are most likely required for the amp to work, you can't run it without them
