Introducing BMR1 V2

more_vert
When the BMR1 Nearfield Monitors launched last year, one of the most consistent praises that it received was the quality of sound. BMR1 packed a punch well above their weight, and looked good doing so. BMR1 is still one of the best options for filling a room with such a small footprint of speakers.  Immediately after launching BMR1 we went straight to work to make it even better. The team has been working behind the scenes to address all of the quality of life improvements that customers have been asking for, and we are ready to unveil the fruits of their labor.

Introducing BMR1 V2—same sound, new user experience.  BMR1 V2 retains the sound signature and aesthetics that users loved from the original revision. There are a handful of noteworthy improvements with V2 as compared to the original release.  Notable Refinements of BMR1 V2:  ▪️ Operating Temperature reduced - There were reports of BMR1 running hot while operating; adjustments have been made to reduce the operating temperature for BMR1 V2 ▪️ Low Power Mode updated - Low Power Mode now works for both Analog input and Bluetooth input; BMR1 V2 will power down the amp circuit after ~3 minutes of inactivity ▪️ Manual Standby Mode implemented - BMR1 V2 can be manually put into standby mode; holding the multi function button for ~6 seconds in Analog Input will turn off the amp circuit and LED (BMR1 V2 will remain inactive until the button is pressed again to reactivate) ▪️ Bluetooth Pairing improved - Several devices can now be stored in memory (note that BMR1 V2 can only be connected to one device at a time and must be disconnected before changing to a new source device) ▪️ Muting on Analog Connection - Analog input jack is able to mute driver output when a plug is being inserted into the analog input socket (only works on insertion, not removal) ▪️ LED Brightness improved - Maximum LED brightness has been reduced to minimized distractions in darkened environments ▪️ Stand Tolerances improved - BMR1 V2 stands are manufactured to tighter specifications, reducing possible tilt while BMR1 V2 is attached to stand ▪️ Cable Lengths increased - BMR1 V2 ships with a longer 3 meter speaker cable (connecting Right and Left units) and 2.5 meter 3.5mm input cable for more flexibility in speaker placement BMR1 V2 is available in white! In addition to the above improvements from the original BMR1 nearfield monitors, we have also added an entirely new color to the lineup. For those who are interested in a lighter colored aesthetic, BMR1 V2 is available at launch with a completely white body and stand.

Will the grilles be interchangeable between the two models? I don’t want to have to buy them all over again… Also, is this going to be a regular thing? I think I’ll pass on the v2 if there’s going to be a v3, v4, etc. in the future 😕

I'm still hunting for a small subwoofer to match these speakers. What's your thoughts on the Audio Engine S6?
Anubisphoenix00Well, I have the Polk Audio PSW10 personally… with a subwoofer, the sound is less directional so you can put on the floor or somewhere you have space, as long as you don’t put it in a corner to amplify and muddy the sound. The PSW10 is quite good for the price… but at the end of the day, a 10” speaker cone is going to make a large thing. On paper, the AudioEngine S6 looks okay. A 6” sub isn’t going to be optimal, but if you need a smaller sub then that’s a compromise to live with. They claim it reaches down to 33 Hz, which while it’s not the lowest you can hear or feel frankly it’s lower than most instruments can produce. I’m surprised it doesn’t have more reviews on Amazon, but they seem positive. I’d say if you have the budget and space needs, go ahead and give the Audioengine or Kanto SUB8VMW a try… worst case, you can return it and be just a little bit wiser.

Is there a way we can trade in our old ones?

Will you fix the mounting mechanism as well? Currently the speakers can tilt left and right unintentionally.

Did you solved the regulatory issue, like not bearing the CE mark while selling to the EU? Will you ship it with an interchangeable electrical plug to make it compatible outside of the us?

So, speakerdriver-wise there is no improvement. I thought the BMR-1's weren't sounding thàt good, so I made my pair passive, by adding small speaker terminals on the back and disconnecting the built-in amp. That one didn't sound great at all, but in passive mode, on a decent amplifier, they really do sound good. The new ones will be better for those who complained about the first version, but I can stick with the old version and keep enjoying a better sound quality.
I need more info on this! A power surge at my work (laboratory) killed the built-in amp of my BMR1. I know… I should have had a surge protector. But I have a PS Audio Sprout II with a 100W (50W per channel) speaker amp, is that too much? Or could the BMR1’s run straight out of a Chord Mojo? I have a power drill and a virgin soldering iron!

EvshrugThe Mojo for sure cannot power the BMR-1s

, and the Sprout for sure can! I forgot the speakers' nominal impedance, so I quickly measured it: 3.6 Ohm (see attached graph), so the Sprout would have 100W/ch. (@ 4 Ohm ! ) available for them, which means you can blow them up if you accidentally turn up the volume knob too far open. Well, I am having a similar situation with an SMSL A50 Pro amp and it doesn't prevent me from doing it this way. I see it as it just won't happen that I'd crank up to a level that they start clipping, or worse. Apart from that, many amplifiers have built-in protection circuits for such. By the way, for the ones less familiar with how to read these data; the graph that I provided says nothing about the frequency response but gives two curves; the blue one tells the impedance over its frequency range, and the red one gives the electrical phase. Both are completely normal :)

While all the other updates are nice QoL things, the heat improvement is huge.

what is the upgrade/exchange option for those of us having the high operating temperature issue?

GunnyYes, they need to offer us some sort of trade-in credit toward BMR1 v2 so that it costs us less than half the price to get a pair that operates at a reasonable temperature.

novazeroYou didn’t get the 40% promo code in your email as a previous purchaser ? That’s how I found out about the v2

Sounds like the major complaints have been fixed. Is the cable connecting the speakers still proprietary?
