I'm an author. Kinda surprised there aren't other authors who've responded that use mechanical keyboards. But there's also the fact of the sampling of people who use MD, like someone else mentioned.

mdmcafMy day job is in IT but I'm also an author a night. One book published, working on the next two. Working on swapping the two profession eventually.

scarhoofThat's somewhat ironic. I used to work in IT and switched first to painting and then ultimately to writing because it was a better (and cheaper - painting materials are terribly expensive) fit for me as an artist.
Writing is by no means an easy way to make a living, especially when you're doing it after a long day at work. So I applaud you for having your first book published. My first book is still on its way to being published, should be another couple months or so. Still have the cover to design and the interior to layout but I'm in the homestretch.

mdmcafNope! It's not easy, but I've been in IT for over 20 years now and I am not looking forward to another 20 years. It's a good time for me to start making the switch so I have enough time to build up my new, second career. IT's changed significantly since the 90's and I dread thinking of where it'll be in another 20 years, plus writing has always been a passion of mine since I was a teenager.

scarhoofOh totally. I've got about 20 years IT experience as well and was glad to get out of the industry when I did. I was more in computer repair shops than the corporate field, though we did provide support for some small businesses and it's not nearly as interesting as it used to be. My 20 years of experience started when I was taken out of class to fix computers in grade school and it was really interesting back then - I remember having to solder stuff and come up with all sorts of creative solutions because Google didn't exist yet. You really had to know a computer back then, now it's as easy as Googling the problem and a thousand links pop up with suggestions on how to fix it. Then there's the existence of the cloud and software as a service and things just aren't as interesting or as fun. The gaming PC I built in 2011 is still running the same CPU, memory, and storage, though I've upgraded the video card a couple times and it's probably the longest I've gone without having to get a new PC in the history of me building computers. It's nice on my budget but not so nice for my incessant need to tinker.
Writing has always been a passion of mine too and it has distinct advantages over working a "normal" job - I get to set my own hours, I don't get late night phone calls and have to come into work because something important has failed, I get to work from home and thus am able to hang out with my dog all day. And I love it. I wouldn't want to do anything else.

mdmcafYou guys sound like me. Went for IT in the 90s, hated it. Stuck to being a hardware tech until 5+ years ago. Quit that etc. Tried writing. Enjoyed it but God damn the hours. Switched to something else I won't mention. And then last year I flipped into a new career and here I am running restaurants. I miss the 80s and 90s as far as how work used to be. Such a different class of mindset and work ethic. Good on both of you. ;)

BrainFlushI miss the 90's as-well. Back when companies still took care of you, pension plans, and long careers.

scarhoofInsurance. Even part time coverage. Meals provided. Actual breaks. And we actually knew our jobs and didn't need supervision or lists etc.
Oh well. On to the new frontier of dumb and dumber.
