Consider the Pilot Metropolitan Medium

I just bought a Pilot Metropolitan Medium. The nib glides smoothly over paper, unlike an entry-level Cross that scratches as it writes, and provides a smooth distribution of ink, even the first time I used it. The pen has a partial metal body but is light and nicely balanced in the hand. I do not know how well it would work for left-handed users, but I think it almost as good as my Waterman, which cost $130 in 1988. It certainly is lighter. The Pilot Metropolitan cost me $14. I'm thrilled. No, it's not a collectible, high-end pen, but for everyday use, it's perfect.
