Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. ▶ TALKS The talks were really interesting, especially for me not knowing a lot about mechanical keyboards (yet). I'm learning pretty fast working at Massdrop, but having heard the stories and everything else that the speakers had to say was immensely helpful. Here's a list of the speakers and what they spoke about:
▶ BOARDS & CAPS The event organizers said that there were around 300 boards, but even that was being conservative. I made sure to check out as much as possible, but between that and talking to everyone I could, it was difficult to take a close look at everything that was there. The picture below doesn't do the meetup justice!
▶ GIVEAWAYS All the sponsors of the event, including us of course, brought loads of stuff to give out to attendees. The majority of all who attended were able to walk away with something which was really great. We gave out a pair of Massdrop x AKG K7XX Audiophile Headphones, a GMK Plum keycap set, some Massdrop x NuForce IEMS, a couple gem artisan keycaps, a bunch of wooden wrist rests, and MORE keycaps! Here are some of the winners below:
▶ FUN EVENT FACTS · Attendees: 222 · Giveaway Items: 177 · Photo Booth Pics: 313 · Keyboards: +300 · Keycaps: Probably a billion, let's be honest.

Lastly (but certainly not leastly), a BIG shoutout to the event organizers and volunteers who put this event together. You could see the hard work they put in leading up to and during this meetup and we all had a blast as a result. Cannot wait until the next one, and the ones after that.
