What's your home office speaker setup?

more_vert
I love headphone listening but prefer speakers for my office. I'm thinking amp and passives or actives with an audio interface. Any recommendations please...

I went with Adam Audio T5V powered monitor speakers and an Audioquest Dragonfly Black USB DAC. Very pleased, great sound for a good price. Near field monitors make sense for the room size and listening distance.

I don't have speakers in my office, but my main speaker rig has these Audioengine A5+ speakers plugged into a Gungnir MB. No preamp required for this setup and I think the A5+ offers fantastic performance for its price (I think there are some serious diminishing returns after them).

I have a pair of AudioEngine A2+ hooked up to my Schiit stack. They sound pretty good to me and they're not super expensive. I also have a set of Kanto YU5's and a Sub8 but it was much too big for my desktop setup, so I moved them into the living room.

For my home office speakers setup, I have my speakers out from my computer connected to Yamaha RX-V393 receiver. The receiver is probably from the late 90's but it works and does exactly what I need it to do and an added bonus is that it also have AM/FM tuner so I am play radio. I have two Sony SSCS5 bookshelf speakers connected to the receiver. The setup is good enough for me.

Here are some recommendations assuming you're on a budget. I prefer amp and passive speakers for greater flexibility when upgrading. 21st century system Amp:
  • SMSL AD18, $115 on Massdrop from time to time
  • PS Audio Sprout if you have a turntable -- oh I said 21st century system?
Speakers:
  • KEF Q100, $300, sometimes $250
  • Elac Debut, $200
  • AudioEngine HDP6, $400 if you want real, furniture grade wood cabinets

Retro 20th century system Amp:
  • Used Creek 4140 or Arcam Alpha 2, $100-$200 on Ebay. These are beautiful, compact, vintage British amps, switchable to 120v.
  • Used Advent Model 300 or NAD 310 if you want a turntable-friendly, well-engineered, aesthetically pleasing North American design for under $200.
  • DIY tube amp, like one of the $140 6N2+6P1 units from China. I added a headphone jack to mine but you have to know what you're doing!
Speakers:
  • Used KEF K120, about $100/pair on Ebay. Compact, well balanced, great imaging from a British company that knows engineering. In comparison most American speakers from this era are kinda huge.

I have 2 sets of active speakers that I use. My primary ae a set of KEF X300A speakers. Very resolving. I also have a set of Logitech Z520 speakers that are way better than their price would indicate.

I have a pair of Audyssey LES powered speakers on my desk for the last 6+ years. They are fantastic. It’s unfortunate that they are no longer being made.

i have an ancient pair of klipsch promedia ultra 2.0, and apart from their (well documented) poor pots for volume control (repeatedly remedied with contact cleaner), i have nothing but gushing praise for their rich and well staged sound that belies their size - but not their rather hefty weight if you can find a set on ebay (seem to turn up as found objects hardly used in the usa), they are a great investment in spite of their age plan b is the topping t class amp and a pair of wharfedale bookshelf monitors - works for my daughter

scruffy1Thanks! I'll check out Klipsch. Many studio monitors are individually powered and connect via XLR and unbalanced TRS, meaning an audio interface is needed for phone playback. Bluetooth would get round that, otherwise the amp/speaker combo. I saw the Mackie CR5 BTs, with Bluetooth but the reviews on sound quality are mixed....

DarrenEdepending on budget, a nad d3020 will give you all the connectivity you might like, and the onboard dac is quite good, so optical / coax / usb from a desktop are all possible - i use mine with an upgraded xonar hdav1.3 for my home theatre
