Can someone recommend a more powerful amp?
more_vert
I'm new to the world of good headphones, so I was excited to receive my HD 6xx's and my O2 amp(standard gain)today. I was less than blown away, however, because even at the higher gain, I am listening at(at least)85-90% volume to get good sound. I know more power usually means better sound at lower volume. Can someone recommend an amp that I won't have to max out to drive these things-without breaking the bank? Thanks.

If you can afford something a bit more expensive, look at the Questyle amps. I have the 400i and think it is superb.

My Darkvoice tube amp barely has to be turned up to deliver painful loud listening with these cans. I am thinking it can drive a small pair of very efficient speakers, transmission lines for example.

Have you listened with them through a non-tube amp(solid state? idk) I'm very curious about tube amps. Never had any experience with one.

No, I haven't. I know an tube amp with the design of the Darkvoice though is not affected with high impedance loads. I think the cheap Schiit Magni might be a good choice for you though.

The problem with O2 isn't a gain thing. O2 doesn't have the voltage rails for HD 6XX. You're covered for some nice loud RMS listening levels, as most everyone is going to point out to you, but they aren't considering peaks and harmonic distortion. O2 will not get you to 120 dB SPL PEAK which is what you want to hit if you're listening at moderate to high RMS listening levels (80-85 dB SPL). The end result is clipping or, in other words, harmonic distortion. This shouldn't affect your low listening levels though. I just find the combination of O2 and HD 6XX boring. It sounds like I'm listening to music that's been stuffed into a tuna can. Instead I'd point you to Aune T1SE mk3. It's a good entry level amp/DAC that you don't have to build yourself. If you don't mind building an amp that will only work well with HD 6XX I'll point you to this guy: http://www.pmillett.com/butte.htm I have also read good things about Magni 3 if you don't mind buying a piece of Schiit, but I generally avoid Schiit, so I can't comment on sound. The math works out on it though.

Researched for hours and I just ordered the Magni 3. I liked the specs compared to my O2-had good enough reviews, also. If I like it, I'll get the Modi 3. I know there are bigger/better setups in my future, but this is where I want to start. Thanks again for your insight.

What source are you using... at 2.5x gain on the MD O2 my HD650 would be at/past hearing damage at 90% on the pot. That is out of two different desktop/rack sized DAC's and an audioquest dragonfly 1.2. I don't like the 650 with the O2 but that has nothing to do with volume

Sounds like an output voltage limitation of your original source. The note is a little better but Samsung's output tends to be on the low side of most high end phones. Be careful on the volume front the human ear can take 85db for up to 8 hours, at 105 db you get less than 15 minutes before damage sets in. To give you an idea a lawnmower runs around 90-95db, if someone has to yell for you to hear them when listening (assuming close proximity and an open headphone design) you are listening loud enough for damage.

I do like my music loud, but I am aware of my safe line(although I hover right at that line). Thank you ,though. Happy listening

how to upgrade system?
I am interested in upgrading my system. I have UE 18 CSX IEMs, using i-phone as source. I am interested in the Focal Elex headphones. What would be the best pairing with DAC/amp. Are there portable options that would work with both?

Does Multibit actually sound better?
Was locking at the Schiit-website and saw that there are some DACs with a multibit-option or -upgrade avaiable. They are significantly more expensive and I don´t really understand how they are supposed to sound better or if they even sound any different. On other forums there seem to be only two sides: The one half says this is snakeoil and the other half says that you shouldnt buy anything else... I haven´t heard multibit yet, so I can´t tell but the explanations don´t make much sense to me. Do you guys have heard a difference with one specific model (like Modi 2 and Modi Multibit) or at least know what exactly it does?

Over-ear closed back headphone for long flight $200?
Taking a long flight coming up at the end of the month. I am looking for an over-ear headphone that won't disturb who I am sitting next to. I am waiting on the arrival of my 6XX's but have read that they may disturb others sitting next to me. I wanted to start researching some options. Does anyone have a recommendation for around $200? I will be using a XdSd to power them/Dac.

Cable question:
I just received my Elex headphones and I want to listen to them, but I only have my Oppo HA-2 headphone amp with me. The HA-2's outputs are 2.5mm TRS jacks, but the Elex doesn't come with that -- it comes with XLR to dual TS and 1/4in to dual TS cords that are marked left and right. I have a cable from my Mitchell and Johnson cans that goes 2.5mm TRS to dual 2.5mm TRS connections, and that isn't marked left and right because (apparently) it doesn't matter which cup you plug these into. The question is: Can I use this cable to connect my HA-2 to my Elex cups, or is the sound going to be off?

Recessed 2 pin connectors
[image] As many of you are probably aware of, the 2 pin sockets on the KZ IEMs are different than those on the TFZ IEMs 🙄. The KZs are smaller and rounded, and the TFZ cables do fit on the KZs, but not great (not the vice versa). I’ve read that the recessed 2 pin cables by 3rd party makers, such as the Tripowin C8, fit the KZs. My question is, do any of you know of any recessed 2 pin cables that fit the TFZs? Or do I just need to use regular 2 pin cables, and let the connection remain exposed?

Looking for headphones along my AKG K712 Pro
Hello, this is my first post, having some trouble figuring out the how the board works but nvm that. Anyway, I'm a musician (also have my small home studio) and a gamer, my current headphones are the AKG K712 Pro and I use Focusrite Clarett 4pre USB Audio interface. The AKG are great headphones, huge soundstage, very neutral, but sometimes the soundstage sound way too big, and sometimes the fact that they are neutral kinda ruins because they are very surgical towards everything I listen to. And sometimes a bit uncomfortable... I had a chance to listen to Sennheiser Game One headphones I liked how much more fun they were listening to music, I knew it wasn't the most precise recreation of the music but the smoothness was very pleasant to the ears, with one downside that the treble was cut bit too much for my taste. I also had the chance to record and listen with the Audio Technica M50X, which were great for studio uses and music, and also were quite fun. Anyway, cut the introduction...

Question for 58X owners..
Do any of y'all go ahead and buy the 6XX after buying the 58X just because you're interested in the differences in the sound? I just bought the 58X but after reading reviews on both, I find myself longing to hear the 6XX as well. Thoughts? Cheers!

Overwhelmed With Finding a Set of Headphones
Hello, I am somewhat new to the world of audio, but have always cared about having good sounding music and media. I am looking for a set of open back headphones primarily for gaming (first person shooters) but also want to be able to listen to music. I listen to a lot of styles from metal to jazz; so I’m looking for a well rounded sound. I don’t listen to hip-hip or electronic music much, so bass isn’t a huge concern for me. I have an old amp/receiver (STR-DH100) and use the 1/4” headphone jack. The amp then plugs into my computer. So my question is... What should I be looking at? I’m around the $200 price range but have wiggle room. I want a removable cable, open back, and comfort is important. I have ATH-m40’s and they kill my ears after long gaming seasons. So far the 6XX and 58X Jubilee look appealing. Also seen some people recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio (but it lacks a removable cable) as well as the AKG 7XX. Any input would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in...
