Which headphones are best, Fostex TR-X00 or Sennhesier HD660S

more_vert
Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a pair of headphones, keep hearing how Fostex TR-X00 are so great. I'm also leaning to buying Sennhesier HD660S, never owned any of these headphones before. I like bass but also clear clarity in sound. Would like some advice on which ones to buy.

Does anyone own a Omega Wooden Headphone or a SAMDI Wooden Headphone stand. Which is the best one to purchase? Like the look of both, or does anyone have other recommendations, appreciate advice.

Both are a good choice. It depends what you're looking for in sound. The Fostex are less concerned with accuracy and more concerned with showing you a good time in comparison to the HD 660S. If you're just starting out and you think this might be a long-term hobby, dump both and get a HD 6XX. The reason is that the HD 6XX is extremely resolving and transparent to source despite a slightly grey-ish background; it's a really good headphone to audition gear with to see what exactly will change in your system. That, and it's just a fabulous-sounding headphone (and IMHO better than the HD 660S).

I have the purple hearts, and ebony th-x00s (tr-x00 is removable cable), and have 6xx Massdrop and have had 660s. The Sennheisers, you will appreciate, and I find the fostex you end up loving. Although the focal elex is the best headphone I have, I still can't help but listen to the fostex when I just want to enjoy the music. You know how there are partners that are much better choices, but some that are just sexy? That's Sennheiser versus fostex. I gave the expensive 660s away because I had 6xx that I took the baffling out of, and they sounded just as good (to me) without being quite as fatiguing (sharp?). The fostex do get a wider soundstage as they burn in, and amps and DACs make a difference too. If it were me, I'd get the ebonies because they have that fostex sexiness, but are more clinical than the purple hearts or mahoganies. Purple hearts and a 6xx for not much more money than a 660, would be the best of both worlds if you can afford it. Whatever you do, you can't go wrong, because they're all excellent headphones.

Thank you for responding to my replies, really wanted to buy Fostex TR-X00 but the build quality became a concern with the hinge being so fragile. I opted to buy Audio Technica ATH-MSR7, liking the look (Gun Metal Grey) and build quality of these headphones. Has smooth treble and detail in the sound department, would have liked a little more bass.

@Mango72 these are very different cans. That being said I own both and they each have great qualities that reach far beyond bass and clarity. Without going too deep some things to think about are as follows. The 660S being open back will give you more width and "breathing room", the sound will catch you a bit off guard at times feeling like it is coming from somewhere else in the room as opposed to being attached to your head. That being said, outside noise will affect your listening experience a great deal more because there is much less barrier between your ear and the outside world. The Fostex TR-X00 being closed back will give you more of a small room feeling, not a loss of sound stage but more like listening in a studio as opposed to a concert hall (more intimate, so to speak). This will also aid in blocking out any outside noise. The other thing you have to decide on with the TR-X00's is what cups you want, which will affect the tonality behind the sound (hard to describe without you hearing it) Mahogany, purple heart, or ebony cups are available at different times and all have different resonance from one another. At the end of the day your ears are the only ones that can tell you which is best for you. If I could let you spend some time listening to both before you made your decision it would give you the best answer, but hopefully this gives you some objective insight to aid your decision.

Are Massdrop still selling the Fostex TR-X00, or are the drops finished. I live in the UK, no outlets sell these particular headphones over here. Been reading about Massdrop delivery service and the reviews haven't been great. Would love to buy these headphones if they can deliver to the UK. Has anyone had problems receiving their items.

Without more background on your listening environment, genres, etc., it's hard to make a confident recommendation, but bass + clarity is the TR-X00 all day long. The Senns are great headphones, and will likely meet your clarity goal, but TR-X00 is one of the best bass headphones you're going to find - it's really nicely executed, deep and very present without being overwhelming or muddy.
