More tales from the trenches

A while back I was searching for a blue toned strap for a Seiko Ice Monster. I bought a several examples and styles, but nothing really grabbed me and very few of them actually fit. Eventually I decided to try Seiko's Navy Blue 22mm, silicone/rubber dive strap, hoping/assuming the color would work and the strap would fit. Turns out I was half right. The strap is one of Seiko’s upgraded silicone jobs, except for the color, it's identical to the black version that came with my SRP777 Turtle; soft, smooth and very comfortable on the wrist. Where the trouble begins is the extra thick, over-built design of the strap—yes, it’s 22mm as advertised, but so thick at the spring bar end that it won’t fit close enough to the case to allow the strap’s holes to line up with the lug holes—no mater how hard you try--and I tried very hard. Now this is the part where the faint of heart may wish to avert their eyes (and the rest of you may wish to role your eyes), but rather than admit defeat and return the strap, I opted for surgery. The solution, it seemed, was to simply remove that portion of the strap that interfered with the fit—a simple enough solution, performed in countless plastic surgery suites, across the nation every day, right? So, mask, scalpel, anesthesia, incision, wipe, clamp…sutures…closing…whisky!

As to the results, that’s a matter of degree—because, no matter how well intentioned, it’s hard to do a good appendectomy if you don’t know where the patient keeps his appendix. Meaning, knowing what I know now about where to cut, I’m certain I could do a better job on my next victim effort. However, after a nip and a tuck here and there, I was finally able, with great effort and may coarsely phrased adjectives and pronouns, able to get the damn pins in the damn holes. Would I advise you to try it at home? Not if I liked you. The truth is, that damn strap doesn’t fit that watch, and anybody who tells you different, was a damn fool for try’n!
