For bass, I have 4 favorites, which are my STAX SR-404 Limiteds, modded Fostex/Massdrop TH-X00 Purplehearts (Lawton driver damping and Jmoney V3 leather pads w/ custom attenuator), Modhouse Argon MkIII (ZMF lambskin pads), and Koss/Massdrop Porta Pro X with Yaxi pads. Overall favorite for bass is the STAX 404 Limited, which is run on a dedicated custom Estat rig (RME ADI-2 DAC, NAD C275BEE stereo amp, and Mjolnir Audio SRD-7 e-stat transformer.) Other headphones I have are a Sennheiser/Massdrop HD58X, modded Philips SHP9500 (Shure 1840 pads with custom attenuators, modded Monoprice M1060 (Audeze LCD microfiber pads, custom grilles), Audeze Mobius, B&O H7, Koss KPH30i, and modded STAX SR-L300 Limited (L700 pads and headband). How I feel my 4 favorite bass headphones rank with each other: Extension (first 3 are fairly close... bigger difference between 3 & 4 than 1-3) 1. SR-404 Limiteds 2. Argon Mk III 3. TH-X00 Purplehearts 4. Porta Pros w/ Yaxi pads Subbass Impact 1. TH-X00 Purplehearts (biodyna impact > anything else I've heard) 2. Porta Pros w/ Yaxi pads 3. SR-404 Limiteds 4. Argon Mk III Midbass Punch (all are fairly close actually... no big disparity) 1. Argon Mk III 2. SR-404 Limiteds 3. Porta Pros w/ Yaxi pads 4. TH-X00 Purplehearts Speed/Detail 1. SR-404 Limiteds (well beyond the others... Estats are a completely different level.) 2. Argon Mk III (noticeably beyond TH-X00) 3. TH-X00 Purplehearts 4. Porta Pros w/ Yaxi pads Here's group photo: https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobbies/Audio/n-6fh3fz/i-vS4KNWq/0/f190a8f9/O/i-vS4KNWq.jpg

I'm curious how much more bass impact I would get going from X00 Mahogany to the Purple Hearts?

Having both, Purplehearts do have noticeably more subbass impact. The frequency graph from Massdrops original drop of the Purplehearts:

Looks noticible. I’m curious if there are people out there willing to trade with me. I’ll most likely have to pay a price difference, but I don’t want to own both since they seem to be on par with everything else. Thank you for this post.

What are your favorite cans that you own? I also own the 58X and they are my go to cans for vocals.

Favorite would be the STAX SR-404 Limited, but unfortunately the left driver is basically now dead so, I will have to see if it is possible to fix. I have the STAX SR-L300 Limited (L700 clone), but it's not as special sounding though technically is unquestionably the best performing headphone I have. Next to the 404 Limited, my favorites would be the Argon Mk3 and TH-X00 Purplehearts... Purplehearts for subbass experience and Argons for overall experience of music with the best balance of detail, speed, warmth, punch, and impact.

Ha ha, great to see the little PortaPro taking on the big boys, love those things. The KSC75 drivers with Yaxi Pads (in a PortaPro headband) sound great too.

I would absolutely recommend e-stats if you are looking for top-tier level headphones and don't mind that you need a dedicated system for running them. I had Koss ESP950 and it was good, but much prefer STAX. STAX L-series compared to the ESP950 is like a Focal Clear compared to a Sennheiser HD6XX. Also have the Nectar Sound, which is a custom $250 estat, which I had custom made using a STAX adapter cable since my setup is for STAX compatible e-stats. Subbass impact is beyond what the SR-404 Limited was I believe, only issue I have with the Nectar Sound is the small earpads, it fits more on ear than over ear, sacrificing comfort. It's also very sensitive to pressurization from the pads and the diaphragm can be easily made to stick to the stator plates and thus it becomes very off sounding. You have to put them on before plugging them in and powering on and must not push on the pads once it's energized. My 404 Limiteds had severe imbalance develop and left driver ended up going out... very depressing with how much I loved them. The Nectar sounds similar to the 404 limiteds, being a warm, more laid back e-stat than something like the L-300 Limited STAX which is brighter and more forward. I also have a Kaldas Research RR1 Conquest (Bespoke edition) ordered and currently in the process of being made which I'm very curious to hear. It's supposed to be the bassiest e-stat that still compares favorably to a STAX in clarity, detail, & speed but in a warmer, fuller tone.

Nice do you find the 95x sounds any near to the 6xx ? Because metal571 said it got a shout at 1.5k which it's the same area for the 6xx ? And does it has a wide soundstage like k712 or hd 800 ?

Well I had the ESP950, not ESP95X, which I found mid focused, warm, and rolled off like the 6XX, but with worse low end presence. I didn't really find the ESP950 shouty. Better clarity/detail and separation with more dynamic sound, but soundstage is pretty much similar to an HD6XX - not a wide soundstage, definitely not wide as an HD700 which is not as wide as the HD800, apparently.

I'm 5 weeks into my wait for a pair of argons and I'm stressing out how this covid-19 might impact his timeline. I know there is much worse to worry about and best case scenario I'm still 7 weeks away from receiving them but I've heard so many great things

Edition XS vs Anada, Focal Elex, or other similarly priced competitors?
Looking for my endgame. I read XS is great and might be what I’m looking for. I have he400se’s and i like them. I have shuoer s12’s which i like as well. I want to skip small upgrades and go straight for gold.

Anything Else Like This?
Has anyone seen higher end versions of these multi out headphone amps? I'm looking into remote recording, tracking, and monitoring setups where many musicians can dock their headphones in the same setup, but I feel there have to be higher end options than this. Any work arounds or better brands one may suggest? FWIW I do enjoy Mackie speakers. Mackie HM-4 Desktop Headphone Amplifier | Sweetwater
