I would make sure it included native DSD capability, a resource: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rHcXP7PExksxZfkif3Rv2CT1Y_ESpNSv2b0nkKlBySk/htmlview# I did like the idea of an ssd for actual streaming and an old-fashioned spinning disk(s) with flying head(s) to update and shut down for noise abatement. Though now costs have come down so large SSD’s are not unreasonable... then folks like esoteric say no drive size/configuration will ever be right and moon is a player only w/o a dac... go figure... My “player”, a Korg MR-2000;) My base rules would (should) be, native DSD, 2TB or larger SSD, and a great clock in an oven. This is a fast changing platform arena; don’t think there are many real mistakes and prices are dropping a bit, interested to see your choice. Do skip the ones with speaker terminals...

rastusI need 6 TB of space, still rocking platters for my media library. OS and core apps run on an NVME solid state.

ElectronicVicesI was doing photo mask process development work for the first 1M DRAM ever made, feeding a program into a PDP8 from a paper punch roll on a teletype because the 8" floppy died,, remember seeing the first 1TB MO disk at Kodak, burning Eproms the last magnetic bubble memory production line at Sperry Univac and buying my first 1TB SSD online... while my Son asked me if I was alright because I paused hitting the buy button, while reminiscing about the journey... luckily that at this audiophile juncture, memory became so affordable, DSD & high bit-rate PCM would be a rare(r) beast without... I only have ~2.4TB on my dedicated music PC... not enough for the future, enough now...

rastusYou seem to have taken a liking to the DSD files, honestly haven't found that many albums in the format that I wish to purchase. Are you a big indie label Jazz and/or Classical fan by chance? Outside of format test files I only own two DSD albums, far more SACD's but I don't spin as many discs as I used to.

ElectronicVicesThe dsd thing was a very serendipitous gift from Sony for me. Knew of it, even worked for Sony for a bit, though like many I stuck with cd’s from a budget standpoint, one bit sound now... how much money?? Right... Did not have the equipment back then to benifit from SACD regardless. In ‘97’ I got a Rega Planet CD player that sated that “real music” need, until I heard studio flac files being played at the AD home show in NYC... now I’m in this really pleasant sounding, bottomless rabbit hole... Upon hearing dsd with matching sq hardware, the stage was finally set, right in front of me. I have purchased and heard shared dsd recordings, best are the ones re-mastered from tape, they even compensate for the magnetic domain field strengths normal decay, but you can still hear the tape... The new indie’s recorded first to dsd, are the future in superior recordings. Getting more into classical, now that I have equipment and recordings , that make it so much more, than a bunch of instruments on top of each other..

rastusWhat I find a shade odd is many of the albums I have on SACD don't have digital counterparts. I assume some sort of licensing agreement has expired given many of my SACD's are coming up on 15 years old and were they themselves remasters of even older albums. Never noticed a huge difference between 192kHz/24 Bit and DSD but I don't have a ton of albums that overlap. Wish Ihad picked up the DVD-A version of Tommy as it was one of the few released on both DVD-A and SACD.

ElectronicVicesDSD was an un-intended gift to us from Sony; when the patent ran out on the SACD format, DSD became common property. I was one of those who said gimmick,, until I listened... The PCM/DSD quibble is understandable from the viewpoint of past artificially inflated prices for the lofty SACD stuff in it's heyday... making it almost unattainable,, but... it was also a natural progression in quality that they were after, and they got it - though 5.6 seems to be the plateau we were all after - one more step up beyond 2.8 SACD. Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater... it was the "one"... well for now. Not a fan of error-ridden 'transport' embedded media of any sort, especially digital discs, now that I can simply directly access the studio master files. Vinyl is still the analog route which I intend to keep,, once I get it all set back up;) need a nice vintage tube pre-amp, desire an old Cary PH-301 to match my CAD-300SEI.
