misterwouldIt's the ink! which has amazing shading propensity, but also that Pilot Music nib is a gusher with a very sweet action---just a bit of bounce. Also, I like to write just a little more slowly to get the best shading out of pen and ink. The ink reads a bit lighter orange that the photo's artificial light shows, but in natural light, it's exactly the color of osmanthus blossoms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmanthus_fragrans). I'm no expert on Sailor inks, but I think it's supposed to be a different orange that their Apricot color (discontinued?) and supposed to shade like the variegated orange color in the osmanthus blossoms. If you like that burnt orange end of the spectrum, check out Noodler's Apache Sunset, my second favorite orange shading ink, and it's definitely darker and, if you really lay it on, will get into the red rust spectrum very well. Oh, and one last thing, you need to write on nonabsorbant paper like the Clairefontaine, Tomoe River, et al. Computer paper and even some otherwise "high quality" (Moleskine) papers can soak up the ink uniformly and so, no shading or sheening. I confess that before these two inks, I sneered at orange inks, too pale, too fruity colored, too too, er, ORange. I don't own any orange ties or shirts and would think twice about even orange sneakers. But I was wrong. I like pretty and these inks are pretty. They make the words look more vibrant; they make the writing more inflected from my pen to your eye. It turns out that orange is fun. And now I know what osmanthus is and I'm going to order some of that tea...
