I was scrolling through Facebook and I saw an ad for Helm Audio and their imminent Studio Planar headphones, launching in 11 days. Always like being up to date one what's current with planars, so I clicked. I was pleasantly surprised.
Now, I wasn't able to find info on their site about whether these headphones are open or closed back, but they're marketed as portable, and accept a single 3.5mm cable. This means you can use them with your favorite Android or iOS cable! I'll be using my q-Jays Android cable, because 3-button remote for Android! 🙂
Besides that, Helm claims to be using the world's first rectangular driver, as opposed to a square or circular driver, with supposedly less distortion.
With 66mm drivers, these planars have a frequency response range of 10 - 50,000 Hz, with a SPL in excess of 100dB despite the unit's 42 Ohm impedance. Good specs for a $350 pair of headphones.
This product already seems to be an excellent value, but I'm sure we can get an even better deal...
Why Doesn't Massdrop offer any DACs capable of rendering MQA files?
Especially for those of us who subscribe to TIDAL Masters, it would be nice to have an MQA option. For those who think MQA is snake-oil, fine, you don't have to buy it. But for those of us who believe MQA offers real benefits, it would be nice if Massdrop provided one or two MQA rendering DACs among the several dozen DACs it offers.
The Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Tube Hybrid: In With the New
The new Cavalli Tube Hybrid is an evolution of the original Compact Tube Hybrid DIY project.
The new “CTH” has significant improvements to the original design: Higher power output, approximately 1W into 50 ohms. The new CTH has some global negative feedback reducing the gain from the mu of the triode to a more manageable gain of 8x. By reducing the gain, we are able to make the amp work with the widest array of headphones through a very simple design to operate. The unity gain, discrete output buffers on the new CTH are updated versions of the buffers used in the Cavalli Audio Liquid Glass amplifier and provide the same or better performance.

The original CTH used a 24VAC wall wart power supply. This is suitable for a DIY project, but this type of power supply is uncommon and introduces raw power line AC and...

Review from Passion for Sound:
I have both elex & HD6XX & while I really like the elex for how engaging, transparent, balance & detail & HD6XX for the smoothness & mids.. I want something that is wide, smooth & buttery while also having a frequency range meaning top & bottom extension & detail just relaxing, what headphone is it?!?
Best pre-amp & active speakers for Pro-ject Debut Carbon?
I am just getting into vinyl and have seen a lot of positive reviews on the pro-ject dc turntable. I was thinking about purchasing one, but didn’t know which pre-amp and active speakers I should pair with it. I am opting for active speakers to save money and space. Maybe once I get more into it, I can invest more into a stereo, etc. I am trying to find the best budget options for now as I know the pro-ject dc turntable is relatively easy to upgrade down the line.
any suggestions are welcome!
What can I use to move music over wifi to my stereo?
Afternoon guys, hope all is well in audio land.
I'm having a heck of a time with a system here. What if you have a big drive full of music but no easy way to get that music to your stereo?
Right now I have a tv with a couple of HDMI inputs. I have a universal disc player +AV receiver connected to one HDMI, and an Apple TV 4K connected to the other. I'm running a Sonos theater system off the digital output from the tv. I have the 2 channel outputs on the AV receiver connected to a stereo amp, which runs a decent pair of speakers. All of my movies and digital music are on a network drive attached to my wifi router. The stereo setup is for my LPs and CD/DVD/Blu, and the Sonos handles all the stuff I stream over wifi. It works pretty good.
Sonos sounds good, but not great. Its real value lies in how easy it is to use. As my stereo system evolves (I have some fantastic analog equipment now) and I go further down that rabbit hole, I now see that my enormous library of digital music...
